Edward's Story

After graduation from West I immediately started at Morton College that summer and continued there getting my Associates in Elementary School Education. After graduation I realized that being a teacher was not what I really wanted to do, so I headed to Control Data Corporation for computer education. Before the completion of my classes I was hired by Procter & Gamble as their swing-shift computer operator. For the next 25 years I worked my way up to being the System Administrator/PC software-hardware support person in the Systems Core Team. At the same time I went into a partnership with a close friend and purchased Harlem Ave Lounge in Berwyn. Worked there 20 years, building it from a dead business to a very successful business. Retired from P&G when they consolidated all the regional centers to Cincinnati, Ohio, their corporate HQ, my final assignment was moving the active Midwest Customer Service Center office to the Ohio area with no business interruption. It had to be a smooth, efficent corporate move. Worked for a couple of years doing network and hardware/software support as a consultant. Consultant work was not for me, I didn't like upgrading systems and create networks that linked more than one location because it usually ended with many people losing their jobs. I retired from the IT madhouse for a couple of months and quickly became bored. Money was not a concern so I became a mountain bike advocate and a forest preserve advocate. Became Executive Director of the Chicago Area Mountain Bikers (CAMBr) and the International Mountain Bicycling Associations Illinois representative. Attended international summits in Moab, UT, Washington DC, Whistler BC, promoting mountain biking in northeast Illinois and sharing my knowledge of advocacy and trail building/repair with others. My experience working with the land managers at the Forest Preserve District of Cook County made it easy for me to give presentations on dealing with 'percieved' difficult land managers and actual difficult land managers. Attained the rank of Master Steward with the district, specializing in trails. Did restoration work (removing invasive species) at various locations, especially focused at Ted Stone Forest, Bemis Woods, Cap Sauer's, Hidden Ponds, Spears Woods and the Chicago Portage (Lyons). Some of these restoration/conservation and mountain bike advocacy talents carried over to my various special events work in Wisconsin with Team Sports Events in Milwaukee/Wauwatosa. With TSE I helped manage road races, 24 hour mountain bike races in the Summer and 24 hour cross country ski races in the Winter, and the Badger State Games in Madison. The opportunity of working on trails [not clout] led me to work for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County and I jumped at it. Worked for Resource Management-Trails for a couple of years until the ugly head of Crook County politics hit me. Administration came in and reassigned me to a much less desirable position. The reason, a clean record, no absenses, willing to take on difficult assignments, responsible, dedicated, everything a model honest employee should be ... and sent to the new Nature Center to keep it clean and running smoothly, in other words, be the janitor. Trails fought to get me back, but it was of no use. As they say, don't poke the bear. Both myself and my old boss kept trying. I gave them two years to correct the problem, not doing so I packed up my trail tools, knowledge an...Expand for more
d toys(electronic gear) and headed back into one more retirement. April 13th, 2012 = DONE! RETIRED! . To keep busy and out of trouble I've been working with the Village of Stickney in Parks and Recreation helping out at various events. Then I took on the Zoning and Zoning Appeals Commission as the secretary. I'm currently a member of the Trees Commission because of my interest and because my past Arborist certification with the forest preserve. I bounce back to the Forest Preserve for the Spring and Fall prescribed burn seasons to work with my old Trails Crew and who's left from the old Resource Management group. Maybe I'll get one or two more years before the district kills off the last of the good guys. In March of 2017 I applied and was hired for my latest "different" career, Code Enforcement/Blight Officer for the Village of Stickney. There hadn't been a Code Enforcement or Blight Officer for 4 years so I had a lot to catch up on. As a sworn officer my responsibilities were to evaluate all 2075 homes and apartments, as well as all the businesses in the village, write violators 30-day notices when there were sufficient grounds, if no compliance, then court citations and an appearance in court representing Stickney. In my slow time I assist the Mayor on special projects and assignments, it's turned a part-time job into a 24/7 life. and to that I add... Recently I was appointed as Trustee for the Stickney/Forest View Public Library to fill an open position, ran for a full term in April of 2019. The April win resulted in a official 6 year term. I was chosen to be President of the Board of Trustees after being sworn in the first meeting in May2019. Finally, in September 2019 I was voted in as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Stickney Police Association. 2020-- as if I don't have a full plate, I've been asked to work with the Mayor, Clerk, and the Administrative Asst on the Stickney Census2020 Administrative Team. Where this will go, I do not know. But it's a challenge and that's what I like about my work. It's been a maddening time since this Con-19 thing hit. I was off work from February 2020 to mid June 2020, non-essentials you know. Came back to a new Chief and a second Dep.Chief. I worked till November when they told me I'm off for the Winter again. Again? I have check stubs, time sheets, day logs etc that proved otherwise. Can't really argue with guys with guns. Off until May when they told me my job has been eliminated in the budget. So off again. I've picked up some new interests and because things are what they are, all I'll say is I'm passionate about Second Amendment rights, a strong Republic and good government. ...and "politics" still does not interest me, same with "retirement". Again retirement didn't last. My reputation was well known and in mid-August 2021 the City of Burbank approached me and made an offer. The State of Illinois takes forever to run background and fingerprint checks, so I waited. October 1st 2021 I started my new career with the City of Burbank, Community Service Officer, Code/Ordinance Officer and Blight fits in there somewhere. I'm currently working on the various certifications I need for both Federal and State searches. Another step up from Stickney's job. I'm currently picking up some extra responsibilities filling in for the late Building Inspector until a replacement can be hired. The pay is not great, but personal satisfaction and continuous learning keeps me going.
