Edward's Story

One of the brightest memories of my youth was during my years at Dorchester High... class of '59... Back then, the boys of DOT practiced and performed military drill every Thursday afternoon in preparation for the School Boys Parade which every Boston public school participated in with no exception for a series of positional awards. This had been an annual event since somewhere back in the 1940's... the last year that DOT won first prize in the SBP was in 1948... up to 1959 that is.. One day the word got out that our drum and bugle core needed several new members, so volunteers were being solicited. This sparked my interest as I was fond of so many kinds of music and being quite apt at playing trumpet since 5th grade, it seemed quite appropriate that I try out using this acquired but not perfected talent. All went well and I was doing just fine as a high school bugle boy for a couple of years or so. Eventually, we all became good buds... even my brother Ron joined our Corps. which really made me happy. Eventually, my best friend Tom became the captain (as he didn't play too well anyway). So there we were in all our glory, we just didn't feel so glorious as we began to read the rules and regs for th...Expand for more
is year's uniforms. We had been counting on wearing our usual show-off of white helmets along with the rest of our splash, but it was a no-go. So it was not looking so hot at our chances of winning the Drum and Bugle competition this year on this very last march of the Boston's School Boys Parade.. Finally, the big day came and we were all determined to play the best we could for all those who would be cheering us on... and so many did on that magic day of brightly polished bugles, shoes and the music that seemed to rally the huge crowd to such excitement. I was a very sharp (I thought) as the first Lieutenant in DOT's Drum & Bugle Corps. of Boston's last School Boys Parade (SBP). The very next day, to all our amazement, we found out we had won FIRST PRIZE. ... in spite of the fact that we ignored all of the posted rules and regulations which excluded: white helmets, white spats, white gun-belts and those sharp bright red ascots we dawned during that proud sunny march through the familiar Boston streets blaring out Sousa's "Thunderer" and "Victory March". Many proud tears glistened in the summer sun that day and would all too soon fade into distant memory.
