Edward's Story

Life Since leaving school I have had an interesting life. I spent three years in the army and saw service in both Vietnam and Korea. After leaving the Army I moved back to Ridgewood N.J. for about a year and worked at a bank. In 1970, I decided to join the Air Force and went to School in Texas for Missile Maintenance Rocket Engine Mechanic. I was assigned to Vandenberg AFB, Calif., where I worked on the underground Titan II ICBM's. Between 1974-75, I did a stint as Air Force Recruitment Public Information officer and was assigned to the office in Hackensack N.J. In 1975, I was again back at my regular assignment at Vandenberg AFB Ca. performing ICBM launches. In 1977, I was stationed at Mcconnell AFB Wichita Kansas, where I moved into ICBM Maintenance Training. I left McConnell in 1985 (as the Superintendent of Training) because the Titans were being phased out, and served as a First Sergeant for a Communications Squadron (flying) at Grisson AFB Indiana. I retired from the Air Force in October 1987. I then moved to Merritt Island, Florida and began working as an Instructor at the Kennedy Space Center. I became a Senior Manager working for the Base Operations Contractor for NASA. I taught Occupational, and Environmental Safety to shuttle and Expendable Launch Vehicle support personnel, including Hazmat Training and Astronaut Support. I have trained almost every shuttle astronaut crew since the Challenger. Yes...I did train John Glen and I also trained Dirty Job's Mike Rowe. I have a BSEN degree, I'm a Certified Environmental Trainer, Certified Instructional Technologist, and a Certified Asbestos Abatement Supervisor. In 2000, I was the Trainer-of-the-Year. In May of 2002, I was awa...Expand for more
rded NASA's highest individual award, The Space Flight Awareness Honoree, for my efforts as an astronaut trainer. In October of 2008, I was promoted to the Chief of Training position for the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (longevity overcoming stupidity). In 2009, I was recognized for reaching the milestone of training 100 Space Shuttle flight crews. By the end of the program July of 2011, I had trained 103 shuttle crews and over 600 astronauts. Now over the Kennedy Space Center, I'm afraid we have empty sky. I really wanted to take NASA into the next generation of manned space vehicle, but I'm sorry to say that the dumb asses in Washington exercised reverse wisdom and canceled that program. I semi-retired from the US Space program after 42 years of service in November of 2012 and was presented the Silver Snoopy award by the US Astronaut Corps. However I still provide Training and Consultation to NASA on an on-call basis. I am married (second marriage) for 28 years to Judith Rea (Filichia) Ryan. She is a retired RN and my beautiful bride. Together Judi and I have 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Judi and I do a great deal of traveling; Hawaii 2009, the Maritime Providences of Canada in 2011, Alaska including the Arctic Circle in 2013, Eastern Caribbean and Hawaii in 2014, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and Haiti and Nassau in 2015, Nassau and Grand Canyon in 2016, Colorado and Western Caribbean 2017, and we have another trip to Alaska planned for 2018. We live in a beautiful waterfront home in Merritt Island Florida. I published my first fiction novel, Reach, in April 2013. and an Alaska travel guide in 2014. They are available on amazon and kindle. Current as of July 2017
