Edward's Story

Life After graduating from Battle Creek (Mich.) Central High school in 1963 with a college prep diploma, I went on to Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek with the help of the Alvin M. Bentley scholarship, which was renewed my sophomore year. I received an Associate Degree in Science, June, 1965.I completed my BA, cum laude, May 1967 from Tennessee Temple College (now university) in Chattanooga, Tenn., with a major in English and a minor in Bible. I married Carol French following graduation, and we left immediate for three months of travel as an Independent Baptist Evangelist. According to prior plans, I joined the staff of Knoxville (Tenn.) Baptist Tabernacle, September, 1965, as minister of visitation. While there I helped develop Tabernacle Kindergarten and Day Care and served as director and eventually kindergarten teacher until accepting a new position as assistant to the pastor of Franklin Road Baptist Church of Murfreesboro, Tenn., in May 1972. While there we helped in the developing of Franklin Road Christian School and Franklin Road Bible Institute. For four months we served as interim pastor in 1973, and left the ministry in 1975. After working a couple temporary jobs in Battle Creek, I rejoined the staff of Knoxville Baptist Tabernacle, January, 1976, as associate pastor, 4th grade teacher, and shortly, acting principal. That fall, I became Administrator of Knoxville Baptist Christian School, reorganized the high school, and taught several junior and senior high school classes. We eventually had a fantastic group of over 100 junior/senior high students--some of the finest young men and women with whom I have ever worked. (Over 250 students attended the school). I also helped organize and directed for 9 years the Original Spring Retreat for Christian Schools at the Bill Rice Ranch of Murfreesboro, Tenn. For the ministry in Knoxville and my work as area representative of the Tennessee Association of Christian Schools, we were listed in Who's Who in the South and Southeast, 1982-83. We ended our ministry at KBT and KBCS at the end of the 1982 school year. In July, 1983, we moved to the Nashville, Tenn. area to be...Expand for more
come assistant to the pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church and principal/teacher of Metropolitan Christian School. We reorganized the high school there and continue work with TACS and the spring retreat at BRR. For our ministry, we were listed in Who's Who in the Southwest, 1984-85. In August, 1985, I accepted a position as night superintendent and counselor at the Nashville (Tenn.) Union Rescue Mission, one of the ten largest in the US, serving there through June, 1987. A parttime job I held at the same time as warehouse supervisor at P & S School and Office Supply of Nashvile, Tennessee, became a fulltime job as director of purchasing in July, 1987. We continued there until the home office in Chattanooga closed the store in March, 1989. We moved to Selmer, Tennessee, to serve as assistant pastor of Faith Baptist Church and music director. Part of our responsibility was as administrator/teacher of Faith Baptist School. We again reorganized the high school and served until June, 1994. We worked at one more church and school (Victory Baptist Church and School) where we served as assistant pastor, music director, and school administrator/teacher. We again reorganized the high school. (Each of the schools in which we ministered had packet programs when we arrived which we reorganized into tradition teacher led classrooms). We ended our brief one year ministry there and our Christian education ministry in June, 1995, with the graduation of the fifth of our five young'uns. Since August, 1995, I have worked at Wal-Mart of Battle Creek, Michigan, from 1996-2004 as department manager of paint/hardware and 2005-2016 as department manager of electronics. During this time we have done over a dozen home office field projects opening new stores, expanding stores to supercenters, remodeling stores, and one fire recovery. I retired from Wal-Mart in 2019. Since 1997 we have attended Battle Creek Baptist Temple where for the last few years I have ministered as adult Sunday school teacher, pulpit supply, and song leader. I still continue to be active in vocal and instrumental music, having played the accordion now for over sixty-five years.
