Edward's Story

Workplace My years at IBM were very varied I started in 1966 as a Quality inspector, I worked in mfg. as a line inspector on hand wired panels and later on the various machines, later in 1972 or there about I transferred to production on the new super market scanners. I later moved over to Production Control where I was a change analyzer on current products for several year and then a engineer change analyzer on new products. I was promoted to department technician and worked there for several years, during one of the early reorganizations I was moved into a staff position and worked there until I was activated by the army to go to Desert Storm, I returned from there with essentially no job and found an assignment again in production control working with the PC company. My career with the PC company as very bumpy and resulted in a lay off in 1994 but I was retained and went on to work in the warranty area supporting North America on new products again. I stayed until Dec 1996 after I had completed my 30 years and have never looked back. Military I had/have very interesting military experience, I grew up a military brat my father was in the US air force and we were stationed in many places, Mississippi, Illinois, Korea, Florida (twice) Japan and Ohio After graduation in 1962 from high school in Tampa Fla. I joined the Marines Corps and went to Parris Island for boot camp and Camp Lejune for ITR combat training. From Lejune I went to NSA Memphis to start my technical school training, I went to casual company and was on MP duty for a very short time I attended basic electronics school and from there went to NAS Pensacola to my class "A" photo school. After completion of photo school I was assigned to VMCJ-1 in Iwakuni Japan. I was first assigned to the photo lab ...Expand for more
but later transferred to the flight line to work on the photo installations crew, we installed cameras and maintained the electronic photo system in the F8U (RF8A) Crusader, my first deployment was to Taiwan for UN maneuvers, we went on several deployment to the Philippines, Korea and the far north of Japan. My last deployment was on Operation Yankee Team in the Tonkin Gulf (South Chine Sea) during the gun boat attacks I was on two carriers the USS Constellation and the USS Bonnie Dick. From Japan and Vietnam I was rotated back to the US and was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point NC. Most of our missions were to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. During my last year at CPNC I was promoted to Sergeant and sent to California El Toro to learn the new photo system on the RF4B aircraft, this was one super aircraft. Myself and Sgt Harry Otterman brought back all the technical info. on the F4 and began training flight line installations back at CPNC.. My last duty with the Corps was as Sergeant of the Guard until my discharge from active duty. To add to a even more interesting military career 10 years later in 1979 I joined the NC Army National Guard, I was first a Unit clerk and and later a Supply sergeant along with secondary jobs of Finance Specialist and the Unit NBC NCO. In January of 1991 our company was activated for Desert Storm 1 and we were set to Ft Bragg where we were supposed to back fill and support the 82nd Airborn finance office, we were in the process of getting outfitted to move to Kuwait when the war was over. Our reserve unit had the honor /duty of processing out of active duty all the national guard and reserve soldiers activated for Desert Storm. I retired from the guard in 1993 as a Staff sergeant with a total of 23 years of service to our country.
