Edward's Story

Life It's been a great 55 years, even with the bumps along the way! After graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1972, I spent 20 years in the Air Force in 20 countries. I was a combat engineer, graduate school professor, earned two Masters Degrees (no time for a PhD), worked with the DEA and NASA, ran an orphanage in South Korea (awarded President Pak Chung Hee's People to People Award), chaired a board for unwanted and abused children in Kentucky, earned a Second Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do in the Korean National Gym in Seoul, flew airplanes, worked civic action teams for the poor in third world countries, taught engineering in foreign countries, built airfields worldwide, been in a lot of jungles, made a lot of friends, was on the DMZ when North Korea came across and killed several other officers in 1976, swam in the oceans off Crete and Azores, climbed a mountain in Indonesia, dove (scuba) the Micronesian Truk Lagoon and other locations, drove 180 MPH from Germany through France and Spain to Portugal, served as Ambassador on several foreign visits, served in the Engineering Command Post for Desert Storm, had dinner with Vice President Al and Tipper Gore (although I am Republican) and had a great four years in Hawaii. I also was a single Dad for 3 years with two of my oldest sons who are half Korean, met and married my wife of 35 years who is also an Air Force Veteran, had a third son, adopted a special needs daughter who is both a "challenge" and a "bles...Expand for more
sing", coached my oldest two sons in Cross Country and Track (distance runners like me), served as President and CEO of the Asphalt Institute in Kentucky for 9 years and served as Executive Director and CEO of the Rubber Division ACS for 19 years. The photo is with some of my staff. You can see we had a great time! Proud to say I mentored my Finance Director (a young super talented black.girl. who I helped take over for me as CEO when I retired (third time).in January 2020. My immediate family has grown, to include a daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren as well as a soon to be second daughter-in-law. Three sons graduated from college with one obtaining his Masters Degree in Theology. Third son graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors, obtained his Masters in International Relations in Australia, his PhD in New Zealand in Asian Studies and speaks 4 languages. My daughter finished one year of college. We currently live in Ohio, and have been to 3 more countries (24 now). Another proud moment was being inducted into the Somerville High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017 (Captain of undefeated 1967 Cross Country Team that finally beat Essex Catholic and Brick Township with teammates Mike Sergeant, Jack Reynolds, Jim Vermeulen, Bob Cowart and Dave Vaughn). Oh yes, I am also a Steelers Fan!! And stay way too busy as Commander of our American Legion Post, Church Altar Society and Parish Council and other organizations. But, I still find time for my love of oil painting.
