Edward's Story
Life
After graduation I moved to Cleveland, Ohio with my mother and stepfather. I attended The Ohio State University from 1952-1956. During the summers of 54-56 I returned to Chester and worked at the Sinclair refinery in Marcus Hook, PA.
After graduation from Ohio State I entered USAF pilot training and graduated in October of 1957. I was based at Bergstrom AFB in Texas until 1959, when I left active duty and joined the Air Force reserve at Willow Grove. I continued in the AF reserve at Bradley Field, CT and Westover ARB.
I went to work for Sinclair Refining company in 1959 and then for Johnson and Johnson. My job at J & J moved me to Massachusetts. In 1964 I went to work for Pan American World Airways as a pilot. I flew DC8, B707, and B747. During the last 14 years with Pan Am I was a 747 Captain. Pan Am ceased operation on December 4th, 1991. I took a 6 month involuntary vacation and went to work for Korean Air on a contract as a 747 Captain. My tenure at KAL lasted from June 1992 until February 1995. They had an age 60 retirement as did the US.
Since that time I have been involved with numerous aviation activities including the air shows at Westover ARB and at Westfield/ Barnes municipal airport, . I also am actively involved with the New England Air Museum as a volunteer. I am a board member(emeritus) of the Galaxy Community Council at Westover ARB. We are the support group for Westover ARB and a co sponsor of the air shows at the base. The next show will be held in the summer of 2023.. I.am a member of the Springfield Yacht and Canoe club, one of the oldest yacht clubs in the country. I am the treasurer of the Barnes Airport support group which sponsors the Western Mass Wright Flight ...Expand for more
program. This is an aviation career educational program for middle school students. The course consists of a 12 week after school program and if successfully completed gets the student 1/2 hour of flight instruction and 1/2 hour of observation in a Cessna 172 or Piper Cherokee.
The high school course takes place at the airport on Saturday morning for 6 weeks with a two hour class. The students get aviation theory, navigation, and visits to the Army and AF at the airport, If available they get to visit United Aircraft and Sikorsky Helicopter. They plan and operate a three hour cross country as a team of 3 with an instructor.. They are also given two or three hours in our simulator at the airport. This is an excellent program.
I married my current wife (Marjorie Pyne) in June of 1956, in Delaware, Ohio. We met in my second year at Ohio State. We have two children, Edward III(64) and Mary Elizabeth(60).
. No grandchildren.
We keep active with boating in the summer. We usually boat on the CT. river and now use a 21 foot pontoon boat. I also try and use the health club at least three times a week. We try to get down to the "shore" at Ocean City, NJ in late June and again late August early September. Can't get a good steak or hoagie in MA.
I had my right hip replaced in February 2009. Had a couple of shoulder operations since then. Just to even things up I had my left hip replaced in October, 2011 on my wifes birthday, everything is working great. Just to keep things in twos, I have had cataract surgery for both eyes and really like the results. What next?
I enjoyed seeing everyone at the 65th reunion of the Class of 52 in May. Well done to the reunion committee, and thanks for the hard work.
