Dick (Edwin)'s Story
Several years after graduation I joined the U.S. Air Force and ended up serving almost 24 years. I did tours in Vietnam at Dong Ha (DMZ) and Monkey Mountain (outside Da Nang). I was also stationed in the Philippines, Taiwan and stateside in Texas, Kentucky, Arizona, California, South Carolina and two separate assignments to Alaska, one near Fairbanks the other in Anchorage. After I left the service I worked for Providence Alaska Medical Center for six years as a systems analyst. I left Providence to take a position with the Alaska Court System as a programmer/analyst until my retirement in 2010.
I have been married to Lynda (Springfield Tenn.) for over 46 years now and we had two children, daughter (Rhonda) and son (Eyran) â pronounced like Aaron. Rhonda graduated from the University Of Alaska Nursing School and is an emergency room nurse. Eyran graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and shares a dual career as a Naval Aviator (Commander) and a pilot for Alaska Airlines. Rhonda has given us two grandsons and Eyran three granddaughters. They both live in upstate Washington. I am extremely proud of these kids.
During and at the end of our kids high school years we became involved in hosting foreign exchange students and ended up hosting six different students most for an entire academic year through AFS and Rotary exchange programs. It was a most interesting time. The students we hosted were from Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Romania,...Expand for more
Belgium and Brazil. We are still in contact with several of them.
In 1998 Lynda and I purchased a lot in Willow Alaska about 65 miles North of Anchorage and began building a cabin. We are STILL working on the cabin into retirement, bouncing between the Willow cabin and our home in Eagle River; this fills a lot of our time. The process has generated a lot of enjoyment for us â fun to have friends up to visit and, oh yes, work. We have been fortunate to have had our grandsons spend up to six weeks a summer with us here each year â they love the cabin and the fun things to do here and we love having them as well.
We try to get down to Washington to visit the kids and grandkids three or four times a winter. We try to hold our visits to the winter time as leaving Alaska in the summer âjust isnât rightâ, summers are usually very nice.
We have done a little traveling in the past visiting Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Venezuela and Ecuador. We plan on doing more traveling in the future as our cabin project winds down. Our travel plans include seeing much more of the U.S. and several countries overseas, with an emphasis on visiting some of our former exchange kids.
Thatâs it, nothing extraordinary but certainly a wonderful life â so far. We have lived in Eagle Alaska for over 30 years now and although we have talked about relocating to the âlower 48â during the winter months we havenât found our place yet â still looking.
