Edythe's Story
I hope old friends remember me as a nice, loyal friend. That's how I hope my new friends remember me too by the way. After graduation, I got married and had two children. Once the kids were in school, I went to college and earned a degree from SJ in Administration of Justice. I worked as a Youth Counselor in San Jose and as a Counselor in a half-way house for women in San Mateo. Then came Prop 13. State jobs dried up so I went to work as a Revenue Officer for the IRS. My husband, Gary, worked as a police officer in Belmont. We moved to Chico in 1980 after he took an early retirement. I was able to transfer and continue my job with the IRS. We were divorced in 1985 and I transferred to Sacramento where I went into management. I re-married (another IRS manager) in 1993 and moved to Alaska where he was working. Chuck had a 12 year old daughter at the time. We transferred from Alaska to Olympia, Washington in 1996. I was diagnosed with uterine cancer and retired from the IRS. slow but I was able to return to work in 1999. I worked as a Revenue Agent for the state of Oregon and Chuck transferred to Eugene, Oregon. His daughter lived with us and attended the University of Oregon. After Chuck finally retired in 2001, he worked for the Treasury overseas in Macedonia and Georgia. I joined him in Georgia where I worked as a Training Officer for Barents Group. As you can see, we just couldn't seem to get the hang of retirement! While we were in Georgia, we began to sponsor an orphanage there. When I returned to the states, I managed to establish a non-profit with the help of our attorney and friends. Now we sponsor two orphanages and have had our exempt status since 2003. We raise money to help support the children's basic needs and visit Georgia at least twice a year. My trip this year had to be postponed because of the August war with Russia. We have found meaningful work and activity and live in a wonderful small town. Life is good!!
That's it for now... Edythe
