Ehron's Story

Although Daniel Crowell was convinced I would give him a job when I was rich and famous, I've got a long way to go for the first and the second is doubtful. After leaving Delta Jct. the summer after 8th grade and moving to Washington State, I repeated the 8th grade so I would no longer be a full year younger than everyone else in the class. Went from 75 students in Alaska to 338 in Washington. I got bored in high school, and finished as class salutatorian. Applied to Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd and MIT for college, interviewed with the latter two. Knew I might have trouble when the MIT interview started with "With SAT scores like this why didn't you get a 4.0 in high school". Harvey Mudd guy basically guaranteed I would get in, then didn't promote me to the admissions board when he saw I had applied to the other two schools, told me he figured I would get into one of them and be better off. Needless to say I got into none of the three. Applied to Seattle University at the last minute, went there for 1 year and managed a whopping 1.83 GPA. Something about going to the computer lab until 7 am and then sleeping through classes, only going in on quiz and test days. Doesn't give you a real good shot on exams when you have no idea what material they're covering. Went to a community college for two semesters, was working part-time construction during summers when I got fed up and decided I had to do something that would force me to stop lying around. Joined the Navy nuclear power program, and spent 12 years at prototypes and on fast attack submarines out of Pearl Harbor. Got m...Expand for more
arried July 1998, during my first instructor tour in upstate New York. During my second instructor tour I attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and got a double major degree in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics. Left the Navy in December of 2006 to be able to watch my daughter (born February 1st, 2005) grow up. I am currently in license training class at a nuclear power station in southeast Pennsylvania. Come December I'll be licensed as a Senior Reactor Operator and going onto rotating 12-hour shifts for a few years, want to get it out of the way before my daughter is old enough to go to school. During my time in the Navy I did get to see a few foriegn ports, though I really only considered Singapore worth seeing. I didn't have the opportunity to really see anything in Okinawa or Guam, and I couldn't leave the naval station in Bahrain, so I don't count those much. My one real disappointment was that we never got to Australia. So much for "Join the Navy, see the world." Next big thing for the family is a trip this summer to the Shetland islands off the northeast coast of Scotland. My wife's long-time friend and his family moved there two years ago as part of a program run by the Scots to keep the island (which is 1 1/2 miles wide and 3 1/2 miles long) inhabited. We're going to visit them for 4 days in early June when the Puffin rookery should be at the peak of its activity. One of my primary regrets as the years go by is not having kept in touch with friends from my childhood, so if any of you happen to come across this, I'd be excited to hear from you.
