Eileen's Story

Mrs. Berry, our Cherry Creek High School counselor, gave me some very good advise when she steered me to a small girl’s junior college in Columbia, Missouri. She also helped me arrange a scholarship and those two years were so key to my love of learning. After graduating from Christian College in Columbia, I attended UNC , majoring in Elementary Education and English. I was married in 1966 to Bill Convery. My teaching career began a week later at Gust Elementary in Denver Public Schools. I taught second grade for two years and then stayed at home with my two sons, Bill and Mike, until Mike entered first grade. Cunningham Elementary School in Cherry Creek District became my workplace when I returned to teaching in 1977. I taught K, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades, as well as the Gifted and Talented classes, in my career at Cunningham, which later became Highline ,when we moved to the new building. I complete a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology at UCD, with an emphasis on Library Science. As the librarian at Cunningham, I taught grades K-6, as well as served as the Technology Specialist. After our move to Highline, I taught grades k-5 in the Media Center. I loved being the Media Specialist, doing drama, poetry, art, book clubs, handling books, developing photographs, video taping projects and presentations. I had wonderful students and fun and intelligent colleagues. I was very lucky in my career. One of my prized possessions is the notebook I received with a distinguished teacher award, filled with letters and cards from students, parents and colleagues. I have a long history with Cherry Creek Schools. I moved to Colorado at the beginning of fifth grade and attended Maple Grove for fi...Expand for more
fth and sixth grade. I was in the first class to attend the brand new CC Junior High and then attended the fairly new CC High School. My brothers and sister attended Sullivan and East Ridge, before going to CC jr. high and high school. My sons, Bill and Mike attended Cunningham, Prairie and Overland, before moving on to CU Boulder. One of my granddaughters went to Polton for four years. My husband, Bill, and I just celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary. We have two wonderful sons, two wonderful daughter in laws. Each of the families has one daughter… making that two delightful granddaughters for us to enjoy… and we do. I keep busy reading, traveling, hiking, writing, and collecting rocks. I love to share my travels with students, or with anyone who will listen. I have traveled throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales on several occasions, have sailed on a windjammer in the Caribbean, held koala bears in Australia, looked into a volcano in Hawaii, and chipped through layers of shale along the shores of Lake Cayuga, in upstate New York, looking for fossil remains of trilobites.. I love to read everything from history to fiction. I love my family, my westie, Fiona, and my books. All in all, as we say in CSAPeze, it has been a good life. Memories of Cherry Creek High School: Good Teachers… Mrs. Roberts, Miss Wilson, Senora Wheeler, Dean Hughes, Patrick De Rocheford Reynolds, etc. Big Sisters, FHA activities, my dear friend for life, Callista Klocker. She passed away too soon. Unfortunately, many of my best friends were annexed by Denver and had to spend their senior year at George Washington. I’m wishing all of you a very happy reunion. I am sorry that I am unable to attend.
