Elaine's Story

Life After graduation, I opted to get a job instead of college...wanted a break from studying. Had a very brief career as a flight attendant (stewardess in those days) with Southern Airways (now Northwest Airlines). Next, worked as a secretary at Texaco's southern regional headquarters. Married Danny Dameron (class of 65); bought a house in Fayetteville; first son, Brian, born in 1972 and second son, Brad, born in 1976. Divorced in 1979. I enjoyed a few years of single life, but with kids. I reconnected with an old boyfriend from HHS, fell in love and we dated for a couple of years. After he broke my heart a few times, I moved on. Met my current husband on a blind date. He was visiting Atlanta from San Diego and mutual friends set it up. We married in 1982 and I moved to California. Our daughter Julie was born in 1983. We moved to Georgia in 1988 and built a house in Coweta County. I started working at the Atlanta Airport in 1988 for the property management company. During the past 7 years, I worked in the Engineering Dept. as an Engineering Asst. It was the most interesting job I ever had because I was very involved in all of the cosmetic upgrades that started a few years ago. After 19 years, I took early retirement in August, 2007 in order to take care of my oldest child, Brian. He and his son/my grandson, Daniel (15 years old)live with me and my husband in Coweta County. Hopefully, his condition will improve enough where he can live unassisted. Then I might find a part-time job, slow down a bit, and stop to...Expand for more
smell the roses. School As a freshman, I had a huge crush on Coach Wilcoxin! I'm sure I was not alone because he was drop-dead gorgeous! Three teachers inspired me: Miss Daisy Frances Smith, Mr. Ellinas, and Miss Mevina Wells. Although they were very professional, they did reveal their 'other' side. Most students never knew Miss Wells could be humorous and compassionate. I'll add more memories later. College I did not have the college experience that some of my friends had. I decided to postpone college for a couple of years so I got a job. Thank goodness I took typing my senior year! I fell in love with having my own money and just kept on working, making more and more money, and buying nice things. Even though I did not get a college degree, I did attend classes at Georgia State and Clayton College. I also went to school at night while living in California. I have also taken several self-improvement/life courses since returning to Georgia. While working at my last job in the field of engineering, I took CAD classes. Mrs. Whiting would be proud of me 'cause I took Spanish again as an online course offered by West Georgia. After watching two of my children go through college, I sometimes wish that I had. Then again, I think of all the things I would have missed! With the skills I have because of the classes and courses I have taken, I actually earned more money than a lot of people who are college graduates. Who knows...I may still take more classes so I'll have enough units/credits to get a degree.
