Elaine's Story
Life after HS started out rocky, moving from dead-end jobs to dead-end relationships. Then, I met Jim Dodd, a virtial baby four years younger then I, but probably more mature in some ways.
A few years after we were married, we joined the local first aid squad and became EMTs. We saw what paramedics were doing and we were blown away... so paramedic classes for us. Not alway pretty, and most time pretty dirty work. Jim lost a couple of patients under circumstances that hit him very hard and ended his desire to do that any more. With that kind of work, you take the high spots (delivering babies and CPR saves) and live on them to get you through the sad ones. I stuck with it until my back and knees said "no more!".
So, more computer programming until I semi-retired a few years ago. I now work from home doing medical transcription online, and making and selling handmade jewelry.
Three years ago, Jim noticed a lump on the left side of his neck. He was diagnosed with head & neck cancer. It was a tough time, and the chemoradiation was rough, but he is doing great now. The only residual effects are an altered sense of taste, hair that grew back a different color, and some skin changes in his neck which you wouln't see unless pointed out. We are grateful and blessed that he had a relatively "mild" type of cancer....Expand for more
I can't imagine how awful it is for some people if this was mild. The way we see it is, if the treatment doesn't kill you there is a good chance at survival for most people.
These days, we live in the North Georgia mountains. We live in a rented house on a 250-acre farm (the owners won't sell it to us becaue it is the owner's folks' homeplace). That's okay. Homeownership is a pain anyway! We have two dogs, both rescues. My maltese/poodle is very sweet and loves to snuggle. Jim's beagle is a hoot. He chases the deer and brings home anything he can steal. I have had to return slippers, shoes, cat dishes, etc. when I have been able to find the owners. We have 3 horses, 3 Arab mares (mine) and a big Tennessee walker (Jim's). We inherited 3 pot-belly pigs when we bought our last house, and I can tell you, moving them to this place was not easy. They have the run of the place but wander home at feeding time. I thought the farmer would make us get rid of them for getting into the corn, but he thinks it is cool having "watch pigs" and they don't eat that much. The horses don't like the pigs much, but have gotten sorta used to them.
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or Jim. He went to St. Rose, but I know he hung out with some of the kids in West Belmar and got into all kinds of trouble.
