Elaine Hughes's Story

Saturday, 30 January 2016 "'SANTA' BOB MARRIES MISS ELAINE 'CLAUS'" Now that I've got your attention, let me introduce myself. I'm Elaine Hughes from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. But for those of Deep Creek High School, class of 1961, you'd remember me as the shy quiet girl who lived next to and worked sometimes at the miniature golf course down South Military Hwy, not too far from the high school. MY MARRIAGE and ONE of the Things Elizabeth City is Famous for: I married my husband, Bob "Cookie" VanDuren, on a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon, on January 29, 1994 in the church we met at: Calvary Baptist Church. The church is located on Riverside Drive Elizabeth City and shares a scenic view of the Pasquotank River with our world famous "Harbor of Hospitality" park, and about 15 boat docks, where ships of all sizes can tie up to for free. Often the boats head come down the Dismal Swamp Canal where they connect with our river, and hence, the free docks. (Ehh, this last sentence sounds somewhat like a touristy ad for our area, doesn't it?...Oh well). ANYWAY... More about how Bob and I met: My husband of now 22 years at the time of this post, was the Singles Sunday School teacher. I was one of the seven of his students. sed to me while he was wearing a Santa Suit. The ring was cleverly disguised inside a Christmas wrapped blouse box: a custom made diamond and light blue sapphire (my birthstone) combo. And even though I was totally surprised when he "popped the question" I answered with a joyful tearful "Yessss!". We honeymooned for seven days on a Caribbean Cruise. OTHER INFO ABOUT ME: Deep Creek High School is the one I have the fondest memories of. Until I retired about 15 years ago, I worked at Albemarle Hospital (for 27 years) as a switchboard operator (when you still had to pull and push in the plugs). "Hello, this is the operator, to whom which I am talking? eh "...of whom when am I talking?" Ummm. That's still not right. "...of whom I DON't WANT to be talking?" Ohh, forget it. The hospital is now called: Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, on N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC, USA. For a time, I managed the Doctors offices of: Hoggard, Barber and McClane, which included reception, accounting and book-keeping. Finally, a Trivia question: We were known as "The Three Musketeers" at Deep Creek HS in '61. I was one, but, what are the names of my 2 other friends that made up our zany Trio? Hint: Their first names begin with: "B" and "V". Bye bye for now, Elaine Margaret Hughes VanDuren. MORE INFO COMING SOON.
