Elbert (Audie)'s Story
Life
My name is Elbert Audie Deryyberry III, but those of you who knew me at Warren High knew me as Audie.
All of you need to go online and look up Family Radio. Thanks to all of you for your friendship and interest in me with: 331 profile visits, 94 questbook visits and 30 emails.
I pastored a local church in Downey, called the Downey Bible Church, for about 20 years. I have been married for 45 years, this March 6, 2011. We have 3 children in their 30's and 40's, two sons-in-law, and 7 grandchildren. My eldest is Ruth, 42 with 4 children: Sarah, 18, Naomi, 15, Elizabeth, 13, and John, 9. Also, Rachel, 41, with 3 children: Timothy, 16 Rebekah, 14, and Noah, 10. And my youngest, Nathan, 37, is still single.
I live about 2 miles from where I grew up; my sister lives there now. She is a teacher in the Downey Unified School District. I have always lived in Downey, I have moved around Downey, but I have never moved from Downey.
I would like to see Mr. Foxworthy again; I recieved "A's" and "B's" in his biology class; he rescued me from Mr. Sellers and the fairy tales he called evolution. Today students can opt out of classes that teach evolution, thank God. Both of these teachers are dead now.
I went to Colleges and took University classes. I studied everything from Art to Medicine to Machine Tool Technology to Christian Theology.
I was a custodian for the Downey Unified School District, for about 20 years, while I studied at a local Bible College. I left Downey Schools in 1994, because of a worker's comp. injury where I fell from a ladder, (the rivets popped out and I broke my back and dislocated my shoulder).
Things are looking up for me physically. My doctor discovered that I have diabetes and an under active thyroid. He put me on medication that controls these problems. A side benefit is that I have lost 120 pounds and feel much better, thank God. I will have to get a new picture for my profile.
Last year I studied Hebrew. It looks like ...Expand for more
I am a permanent student. In 1994, I went full time as pastor. I had been pastoring my church since 1988 and working for the Downey Schools. I officially retired as pastor in 2006, (pastor emmeritus), but you wouldn't know it, since it is a lifetime calling. It looks like I will die in the pulpit. But I have more freedom now.
I am used to be a member of Citizens for Downey, where we hear about local, national and international issues and other current issues of concern, but they disbanded a year ago. Also, I was a member of the Downey Interfaith Fellowship, a group of Clergy who meet for fellowship, I left them this year, way to liberal! But they are not representative of the majority of the churches in Downey. They made it clear to me that they do not want the majority of the churches in Downey in their fellowship and that is ok, the Majority of the churches in Downey do not want to fellowship with them. Downey has changed for the worse.
Although I did not list any pets, I have had 3 cats in the course of my adult life, but they are all gone now. I will not be getting any more pets, since I have developed allergies to just about every living thing with fur. My worst reaction is to horses, which is sad, since I like horses, but my doctor says that I might be able to take shots to reduce my reaction.
I used to ride horses some when I was younger and later with a friend who raised horses in Paramount. Years ago it was not unusual to see horses ridden through the streets of Downey. I had a friend who kept horses next to their house on Stewart & Gray Road.
Horses, cows and orange groves: oh, the smell of orange blossoms on the cool, evening breeze. The sound of the train's horn in the middle of the night would sing me to sleep, as the train rumbled through Downey, just south of Firestone Boulevard. Those were peaceful days. Those trains still sing me to sleep at night.
Downey has changed so much but it is still fairly conservative, thank God.
