Elizabeth's Story
Life
Well I think I have come a long way in even a year!!!!
I got married in 1993, just after finishing my third year at UVic. We were shipped out to Halifax, my husband Doug being in the navy. A year later, we were shipped back to Victoria, where we stayed til 1998--moving to a total of 3 or 4 different places. Reason being, we had 4 kids in 4 years!!!! March '98 was when Doug got out of the military and accepted employment at a telecommunications Co. in rural AB, in the area he grew up and in which his family remain.
6 months later, he was laid off due to work slowdown, and went back to school (Application and Management of Information Technology at UVic), retraining in computer hardware/programming/project management, etc. Originally he was a naval electronics tech. The course was in 1999. Anyway, we stayed at my parents' house while all this was going on:). After he received his certs, he was hired at his current place of work in spring 2000, and we moved back to AB, to Elk Point.
Up til 2003, I was a stay-at-home mum, homeschooling my 4 kids. My husband Doug works as a ...Expand for more
network/systems administrator for our library system, covering thousands of sq. km. I guess I should mention my kids--3 boys and a girl--are aged 10, 9, 8 and 7.
In 2003 my husband experienced a lg. wage cutback, which necessitated me finding a job to supplement. So, my friend hired me as a Nursing Attendant at the Extended Care next door to my house. I love my job, and completed my certification by correspondence very quickly, and thankfully got good grades too. I am now contemplating studying to become an LPN, and am just finishing up Biology 30 to fulfill entrance requirements for that. Eventually, I hope to study to become an RN, but that won't be for a while yet, as I am still homeschooling the kids and plan to do so for the forseeable future. I enjoy it, they enjoy it, and it's a challenge!!! Alberta provides a very good support system for homeschoolers, with good funding, especially with School of Hope. It's great!
Update....it is now 2006, and I am in the process of studying for my LPN diploma. It's a long process, requiring some dedication. Hope I can stay the course!
