Elizabeth's Story
Hi fellow Hewittites!
After divorcing my husband I moved out of New York City in 2003 to live on Islesboro, an island off the coast of Maine where I have summered all my life. I moved here full time in 2003 with my son David . David was born 2/18/91, has fabulous red curly hair, and is, of course, brilliant!. He is also a star soccer player, having qualified for the Maine all-star team in 2007 and he is a valuable member of his local high school varsity basketball team. It has been a bit of an adventure living here because it is an island and we have to take a ferry back and forth to the mainland (or civilization as we like to call it) and the last ferry is 5pm, which limits a lot of activity that one takes for granted in the civilized world - like going to movies, restaurants and going to the dry cleaners. The island consists of two grocery stores, a post office and fortunately, a very good magnet school (grades k-12, with 85 total students) -but no Starbucks !!. While it is a bit isolated it is extremely beautiful, and in the summer we do get to expand our horizons a bit with a place to get ice crea...Expand for more
m and basic luncheon fare and I belong to a club in the summer that has tennis, golf and sailing and, currently, the only restaurant in town (open only July and August). So after a very long, cold and dark winter (it gets dark by 4pm and the winter of 2008 we got about 20 snow storms that only ended in April) I have a lot to look forward to and David and I have settled in rather contentedly, though he wants to get out of the northeast for college (he graduates in 2009), preferring to attend a college in warmer climes like California or in the southeast. I work part-time at the local preschool, which is terrific, and I volunteer at the local library. I am also an esteemed member of the board of the local Historical Society.
I have been in almost constant contact with Perry Lee Barber, baseball umpire extraordinaire, who always extends her generous hospitality to me whenever I get to New York (which is not often enough), and her wonderful twin sister Warren (who, unfortunately, I do not get to see very often since she lives way out in Vancouver Washington).
I look forward to hear from more Hewitt alumni.
