Elizabeth's Story
Life
I have two great kids. I am a staff writer for the Bergen Record, specializing in immigration. I have worked for The Bergen Record for 18 years. I thought that by now I'd be a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, but kids and life in suburbia can change your plans and priorities. Jobs I once dreamed about, and that many journalists would kill for, have been offered to me, and I've turned them down because it's meant either uprooting my family or putting in very long hours at work and spending less time with my kids. hieve certain things in journalism. I have been lucky enough to have gained praise for my work in my field, and I often speak to groups of journalism students or less experienced journalists -- something that I find extremely fulfilling. The highlight of my life is my kids, and of my career is winning the Lifetime Achievement Award by Columbia University Journalism School (2004) and appearing as an expert on immigration on ABC-TV's "Nightline." I owe this professional fortune to my late parents, two devoted and hard-working Cuban immigrants who selflessly strived to give me and my brother a better life than what they had.
