Elizabeth's Story

Life After OLVA, I moved to Washington DC to attend Trinity College - graduated in 1976 with a degree in French. From 1976 until 1980, I worked for General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Washington DC (did not speak a word of French in the process - quelle domage)! In February 1980, I was accepted into a Financial Management training program with the Department of the Navy - this has been my career ever since. I have held numerous positions as a budget analyst with a variety of different activities, but always with the Department of the Navy. Of course, this found me in the Pentagon on 9/11 - in the section that was hit, 2 floors above the impact area. Obviously it was not yet my time to go. On the personal front, my parents are both deceased - Mom passed away in 1984 after a long battle with chronic lung disease. My father passed away in 1989 - congestive heart failure. He had relocated to Northern Virginia to live with me after my Mom's death. Though we had our moments, overall it was a good move. My only sibling, my brother Jim, passed away in 1994 - he had the AIDS virus. He lived with me in the last 2 years of his life - much of that time he was well enough to enjoy life in the DC area. Having spent much of my adult life caring for family members, it was certainly a joy for me to meet my current partner (also named Liz) in 1999. She has 2...Expand for more
children and 2 grandchildren from a previous marriage, so I now have inherited a loving family who view me as More Mum and More Nana!! I still have some cousins in the New York area who I remain close to so I return to the area when I can. That being said, I have not been in the area since In November 2003, Liz and I relocated to London England for my job. And we had a ball traveling around the UK and throughout Europe - it was fantastic. And the job was far less stressful than the position I held in the Pentagon. Liz was actually born in Leeds England - and trained as a nurse in London - so it was like going back home for her. And she has 3 siblings still living in country, so we had lots of time them to spend holidays and special times with. Our household also includes 2 wonderful tabby cats, Jimmy is a 7 year old brown tabby and Henry is a 2 year old orange tabby. They are a joy to have around. Liz is a retired RN - and I retired as planned from the Federal Government in the Spring of 2006. In retirement, we spend 6 months at our condominium in Rehoboth Beach Delaware and 6 months at our condominium in Calgary, Canada (home to the children and grandchildren). These are the highlights - hard to encapsulate a lifetime since OLVA in the allotted number of characters. I would love to hear from old friends who I've lost touch with over the years.
