Elizabeth's Story

Various classmates have asked me who my biggest crush was at Tam? I really can't say. In the beginning, I looked for some cute guy in every one of my classes, praying that just one would ask me out. Only one I wanted ever did. You see, I was attracted to the shy, cute, brainy and athletic guy. It was this shyness element that kept me from attending any and all high school dances. I was a great dancer, but only those in my ballroom dancing class ever knew. Then one day, I found a cute guy that appeared to like me too. It took three months of my dropping hints in our Spanish class, before he ever approached me at my locker. I asked him things like, "Do you like going to school plays much? I do. Do you like ice cream? Have you ever been to Old Uncle Gaylord's? I love that place. What kind of food do you like? I like Italian." Guys can be so dense. He finally asked me out to see a school play. His mom sat in the back seat of her Volkswagen, while he drove us to the Ruby Scott Auditorium. He needed his mom to be that driver over 18 in the car, because he only had his permit. Fortunately, his mom didn't come with us to the play. She drove back home and returned a half hour after the play had finished. He held my hand all through the show. It was the biggest thrill of my life. I was amazed how much two people could sweat so much through their hands. It took two weeks of hanging out with him, practically every day following that night 12/12/75, before I ever got that first kiss that I had always dreamed of. Even then, at fifteen, I had to make the first move. I kissed him on the cheek. It was when I tried to do it a second time, he kissed me on the mouth. To top this story, it took my husband twenty-five years to ask me out. He found me through Classmates.com. He wrote one letter and di...Expand for more
dn't write again for a whole year. Then, he asked me if I'd be interested in getting together with some other friends from Tam that he had found through classmates.com as well. Maybe that's what took a year, lining up others to accompany us. No one showed up but Paul that first day we got together. We then logged many hours together alone after that and he finally revealed that he had once had a crush on me way back when. Yet, later, when he proposed, he had to ask me first, "If I asked you to marry me, uh--I mean one day, would you say yes?" Shy guys. Sheesh! I told him I would. And then he asked some thirty times afterwards. I kept saying yes. He still asks me from time to time. I remind him that we are already married. "Oh yeah," he giggles. At each reunion, some cute shy guy I used to know asks me if I ever knew that he had had a crush on me. Usually the answer is, "No." He says, "I didn't think so. I was too shy to say anything" I attended the class of '77's 30th year reunion and it was one of the best times of my life. Everyone was so kind to me. Neither my husband nor I knew how fondly we would be remembered. I met new people and had many great conversations. I didn't have one bad experience. We were all so sad when the weekend came to an end. I hope and pray Class of '78's reunion party is as lovely. I was very glad that because I married Paul, I had opportunity to attend his reunion. I'm even more happy that Paul spoke up, after all these years, despite everything in his life being in turmoil. It turned out when he first visited me, he was going through a messy divorce, but that wasn't going to stop him this time. He proposed anyway. I knew then, he was the shy, cute, brainy and athletic guy that I had always wanted since high school, but just had never asked me out.
