Elizabeth's Story
Life
I achieved my Master.of Library and Information Science in May, 2010. After teaching information literacy and computer skills for six years, I found myself disabled by several rare diseases. Nevertheless, I have persisted. I am now working on a Master of Public Health with a concentration in social and behavioral sciences. I want to work in health literacy, helping people by creating literature at their reading level, teaching about specific illnesses, and providing help reading health information. I am approaching.my Applied Practical Experience, and I hope to do it at a mental health organization. There are a plethora of them in Kent and Portage County, Ohio, where I live. I will still have several required classes to take, and I'm going to require 4 - 4-1/2 years to finish my 2 year degree, but I'm going to persist, no matter how long it takes.
Blessings,
Liz
Life
I'm headed to graduate school in Library Science and hope to finish my degree by spring, 2010. (Golly, who ever thought 2010 would seem so soon?) I hope everybody is doing well. Keep in touch.
Blessings, Liz :)
School
So you wanna know what I did in high school, eh? It was the best of times... Actually I had a lot of difficulty. Most of you remember me as being very nervous and insecure and I wouldn't disagree with you. But also remember that I got up in front of everyone on Ossie Night and performed a piano solo -- my own work! I still like to share with people, don't mind helping others with their work, and I love to share information. Perhaps that's why I'm a librarian now. Come to think of it, I spent a lot of time at the Ossining Public Library... Let's see, there was also the volunteering at Phelps Memorial Hospital, and oh yeah,
MARCHING BAND!
My five years in band at OHS (starting in eighth grade) are what kept me at OHS. Otherwise my parents were pushing me to go to private school. Those of you who were my band friends -- thank you, y'all literally kept me from going insane.
Since high school I've found out that grades aren't everything. In fact, tonight I counseled a student who is having difficulty studying for his final exams. My bit of wisdom: college is as much about learning your limits and the balancing act between social life, work, and various classes/subjects. Sometimes the best ...Expand for more
student is the one who goes to the professor and says, "I don't quite understand this, can you help," or "Can I get an extension, this is as far as I've gotten." In high school I didn't know that, and half of my anxiety came from trying to be perfect on my own! So there's something different... Something special I learned, even after graduating so high in our class.
Sending out a "hey, hi, hello!" to Val, Chris, Sarah, Paola, Keri, Meri, Paul, Alanna, Carol Ann, Ilene, and all the rest of you... your name is a "file temporarily not found!"
God bless you,
Liz
College
Scholasticus iugis
It's been six years now and I still think of (my first) college as a great time. It's not necessarily going to be the best time of my life, but it was definitely a time of change and learning for the better.
Jesus called me to His family in 1992 and all the way through college I received His blessings -- a chance to go to The University of New Mexico on exchange, parents who understood my need to change majors, summer study on scholarship, time for three minors, and still graduating in four years! What blessings to learn so much in so little time!
I never thought I would "go Greek" and yet I found the perfect blend of social, service, and academic support in Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. What a wonderful opportunity it was and I thank all of my Eta Rho and Alpha Sigma sisters for their love and support. Of course my friends from The Pride of Delaware and The Spirit of New Mexico Marching Bands were essential to my fall semesters (and some of you stuck around in the spring, too!) My sisters and brothers in Christ -- members of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship -- were the rock on which I stood even in the worst of times. I will never forget you.
So what am I doing with my B.A. in Music now? Absolutely nothing. The B.A. is the important part -- it qualified me for my job -- but I am not a professional musician. Instead the keyboard calls when I am about to go insane and the music calms my soul like nothing else can.
Sending out a big yell to Amanda, Melissa, Susan, Sara, Nicole, Eric, Marc, Dan, Holly, Cat, Lisa, Jen LJ, Anne, Sue, Julie, Maria, Mika, Priscilla, Suzie, and all the rest of you I'm thinking about but... well, you know your name has slipped my mind yet again!
Blessings,
Liz
