Elizabeth's Story

My story? After high school, I attended college. First WVC and then Seattle U. I graduated with a degree in elementary education with music as my major teaching area and math/science as my minor. After that I taught music in Wenatchee and subbed part-time. I had my mid-life crisis at the age of 26, quit my job, moved to Vashon Island and lived in a big farmhouse with 3 other girls. The locals on the bus told us it was haunted. Well, we found out the house wasn't haunted, just the roof rats in the walls. One day the bus driver asked why there were so many different girls getting on the bus at different times. I think he thought we were running a brothel. Yeah, 4 "good" Catholic girls. Well, I know I was good. During my time over there, I worked for a sweatshirt/t-shirt design/printing company in Tacoma and commuted on the bus by ferry, getting up at 5 AM and getting home at 7 PM. Why can't they just build bridges over there? So, I ended up with a bad case of Epstein Barr Virus ( mono). I had to quit work, move home with my parents, and recoup. My mother told me that the only reason I was sick was because I was dating a younger man. Thanks Mom. From there I moved to Ellensburg to finish the 5th year of my ed. degree. During that time, I started dating Grant, who lived in Orondo and who I'd known for a long time. We got married in 1992 and I became a farmer's wife. I lived only a half mile from my parents and a half mile from my in-laws. I didn't end up far from home. I subbed, helped with harvest when I could. Yes, I can still drive a tractor, work the forks and move bins. I also was a good QC person. I even did a return performance as a peach packer for our first 2 havests of peaches. I guess I can always fall back on a career as a swamper or peach packer. We had our twin boys in 1994, Noah and Cullen. They are 16 now and licensed to kill. Oh, I meant to say "drive". We also have Emma, 14, Sophie, 12, and last but not least, Lily, 9. I also have 2 step daughters, Amy and Kelsey, and am now a grandmother by default (Elijah, 2) When Lily was ...Expand for more
about 2, I began teaching pre-school here in Orondo 2 days a week. During the years, we built a house on the river and lived there for many years. We have since sold the orchard, are leasing out our house and are buying my parent's house and living there. So I really haven't gone far from home. Grant went to work for Orondo Fruit Co. Don't ask me what he does now, but he has an office and a cell phone. A few years ago, I got very sick, couldn't eat, began losing weight, which I didn't think was so bad. Coming up with double vision and having the doctors think I had MS or a brain tumor was the last straw . After an MRI and a full blood work up, it was decided that I had the dreaded inherited family blood disorder, Hemochromatosis. 4 out of us 9 kids have it, but you know me, I always have to try and out do my sibs and mine was the worst case. I can't process the iron out of my blood and it likes to accumulate in my liver. The iron level in my blood was about 100x what it should be. The dr. remedies this by blood letting. I'm not kidding. At least it's done at the clinic and not in the barber shop. In the ensuing years I finally had to quit teaching because of my health issues. So now, I am playing the role of housewife. But, I like the term "domestic goddess" better. I do the "Mom" thing, or I try to. My teenagers will tell you I'm a horrible mother and maybe they're right, but they are by no means stellar children. They get to all their sports things and all the activities they have, but it's a team effort with Grant. I get to see a lot of classmates at various sporting activities though. So I am a soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and PTA mom. I still play the piano and for past 5 or so years, I have accompanied for the yearly Missoula Childrens' Theatre production at Orondo Elem. Through my sickness, I lost over 100 lbs, but it wasn't a great way to do it. Today, I am healthy, walk 2 mi. a day and am eating again. So if you see me and think you might know me, it is me. So..... if anyone is ever in Orondo, you know where to find me.
