Ellen's Story

Life Summing up 34 years in 4000 words sounds like an assignment from an English class of long ago, but I'll give it a try. The 70's alone would take twice the verbiage so in an effort to share the really good stories of the 80's and 90's I'll simply mention that the the 70's were fabulous, fun-filled years of travel where I got to meet some life-long friends, see a lot of our world including Hawaii, Japan, Taipei and China and basically came to understand that there is, indeed, "no place like home"! In a desire to expand my horizons (an attitude that was hung over from the 60's) the 70's was a time for traveling with friends. I enjoyed becoming acquainted with people and customs from other lands and islands. In Taipei, I spent a few days with a grad student from AZ School of Int'l Management who taught me something about the Chinese design concept of "less is more". Her house was sparsely furnished, a feature that I misunderstood at the time because I thought she just couldn't afford furniture. However, I found out that to her, furniture was over-rated and it was far more comfortable and practical to sit on pillows or low benchs on the floor. But the floors were made of the finest moroccan tile and I was so impressed by the simplicity of the structure that I took a few interior design classes when I got back to California later that summer. Even though I was not able to afford my own home until much later, I've tried to incorporate the design concept into my own space whenever possible. In my case, however, the tile is on the wall, the theme is Southwest and the tile is from Artesanos in California. No dragons or tea lights, just an attempt to show-off a basic home with what I believe is a little flair of my own. Otherwise, the 70's was a time for introspection. I looked at the world somewhat philosophically, which didn't earn me a lot of money, but did give me a good perspective on what I wanted for my future. The "future". Now there was a concept I did not embrace until much later. Instead, I took classes at...Expand for more
a Community College in California, lived with girl-friends who joined me for "happy hours" and frequented the discos that served dinner so we didn't have to leave the premises after all that wine. I wore platform shoes and listened to Bruce Springsteen albums and the Grease soundtrack until they wouldn't play anymore. With the exception of the socio-economic struggle, it wasn't a bad time at all. Well, I guess I had more to say about the 70's than I thought. I'll get back to this bio at a later date to catch up on the happenings of the 80's which included friends, family, marriage and my daughter. OK, I'm back. Since my '70's were footloose and fancy free my '80's were much more down to earth. I settled in San Diego CA and worked for a pediatrician for 8 yrs until I had my daughter in 1988. I loved my job, my life, my daughter...all of it! California was fantastic in the '80's. But one morning I woke up and all of a sudden it was 1994 and almost all of the orange groves were gone! The days spent with my daughter at Sea World and the San Diego Zoo were traded in for the mountain desert of Northern NV, horseback riding, an artificial Water Park and trips up to Lake Tahoe. The transition from Montessori school to public school was a trip but it turned out just fine. And my daughter is in college now. Once settled I went to work at a CPA firm for 9 yrs and participated in PTA events, Craft Shows and helped my friend from Montana form a non-profit dance company. I left the studio in 2001 to pursue my own destiny in the art world and I'll figure out how to put up photos of my work in case anyone out there is interested. After the millenium and the events of 9/11 I felt like I wanted to re-connect with my friends back east again. That's when I found classmates.com! Thank you for taking the time to read my bio. There's more to life so I'll have to pick this narrative up again later when precious time allows. Until then, I hope you are well and enjoying life. To be continued... Ellen
