Ellen's Story
Life
After graduating FDR, I went to SUNY Binghamton and majored in theater. I got a job as a disk jockey and I was the first woman to be on radio in Binghamton. I always wanted to live in the Western United States, so my boyfriend and I packed a van and traveled for 4 months, landing in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I did radio and he became a ski instructor. It took me years to overcome severe fear when I skied, but I eventually became a ski instructor and I have been teaching skiing since 1980. I received a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Antioch in 1991, and I worked as a psychotherapist for several years, part-time in winter and full-time when ski season ended. 8 years ago, I met my husband. He worked as a sound mixer in the movie business and he has won 2 Emmy awards. We've been married for 7 years. We moved to Carson City, Nevada in 2003, and bought a condo in South Lake Tahoe when I started teaching skiing at Heavenly, which I've done for the last four ski seasons. My first season at Heavenly, I was nominated and featured in Ski Magazine's Top 100 Instructors, and this past season ('06-'07), I was the most requested private lesson instructor at Heavenly, an area reknown for the high quality of their instructors. I'm very proud of this accomplishment.
Workplace
When I graduated from college, I worked as a disk jockey in Binghamton, NY. I continued dj work in Santa Fe, NM, until I started skiing and then teaching skiing (in 1980). I've taught skiing ever since, however, I went to graduate school (Antioch) and received a master's degree in counseling psychology in 1991. In addition to teaching skiing, I've also worked as a counselor and psychotherapist (mostly during the years 1986 through 1996).
