More about Ellen:"Born 1950 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, began playing trumpet at age 12, started working professionally at 15 in the Milwaukee area. Attended Greenfield HS, class of '68, and is the first woman to earn a B.M. in Jazz Studies from Indiana University in 1975 (with honors).
Moved to NYC in 1975, and worked as a professional freelance musician. Recorded three platinum albums with Chic and Sister Sledge, also recorded with Laura Nyro, Luther Vandross, Allen Toussaint, Isis, Latin Fever, Holly Near, and has over over 25 album credits. With saxophonist/composer Jean Fineberg, formed DEUCE in 1979, the first jazz fusion band led by women, and produced two recordings, "DEUCE" and "Windjammer." DEUCE performed nationally at festivals, concerts and universities, including Celebrate Brooklyn, Lincoln Center Jazz Festival, Three Rivers Arts Festival (Pittsburgh), Seneca Falls Jazz Festival, Kansas City Women's Jazz Festival, the Greek Theatre (Berkeley, CA), Summerfest (Milwaukee), University of Pennsylvania (15 campuses), Indiana University, California State University, Barnard College, University of Wisconsin (Madison).
Relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989 while continuing to perform with DEUCE and local groups. Founded the Montclair Women's Big Band in 1997, and released a self-titled debut CD in 2005. The group has performed for the Grammy Foundation, headlined the Mary Lou Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center, SFJazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, and continues to perform locally and regionally. The CD is a best seller on CDBaby.
Currently on the faculty of UC Berkeley and The Jazzschool (Berkeley, CA). Founded the first of it's kind Girls' Jazz & Blues Camp in 2009 at the Jazzschool, and currently co-directs the camp with Jean Fineberg. The Camp's all-women faculty includes some of the best jazz players in the Bay Area.
