Ellen's Story

Life After graduating from Alameda High in 1961, I stayed in the Bay Area for several years, went to Chabot then San Jose State, graduating with a Bachelor's in Nursing in 1977. Worked locally for three more years, then entered the Navy as a nurse, and was stationed in Camp LeJeune, NC, Rota Spain, Philadelphia PA, and finally Patuxent River Maryland, When I entered the Navy, my oldest daughter was already in the Navy as an Air Traffic Controller. While in Spain, my first granddaughter was born, as my daughter was living with me there. I now have 18 grandchildren, ranging in age from 4 to 26 years, three kids, two stepchildren, and have been living in Maryland, where I retired from the Navy, since 1991. My husband is also retired Navy, but retirement hasn't slowed us down. I work full time as a Professor of Nursing at a college nearby, after finally finishing a dual Masters (MBA/MSN) in Aug 07. Music has always been a big part of my life, from when I was a little kid. I still play the piano, as well as the...Expand for more
cello, which I played in the orchestra at Alameda. In my spare time I am still active in barbershop singing, direct a Praise Band, and a Sanctuary choir, and my husband and I are advisors for a Venturing Scout Crew (co-ed, ages 14-20, chartered for high adventure activities). Last summer (07) I completed my open water scuba diving certification, and have done lots of other fun things, such as white water rafting, canoeing and/or kayaking and camping. My husband and I own several rentals, which we rehab from time to time. I am really looking forward to finally selling those and spending time doing something more fun and less labor intensive. I live in a historic home (which IS haunted), and in which Edgar Allen Poe was supposedly staying when he wrote "The Raven." I am only about an hour south of Washington DC, so get a chance to go there from time to time. Every time we go, we see new things. It's a wonderful way to visit history. If you're ever coming to the East coast, let me know. I have lots of room.
