Ellen's Story

Most will remember me and my two sisters, Pat Thompson and Diane Dominguez (both nee Metcalf) because we worked for our dad, Levi Metcalf, at the Canadian and Sky Vue theaters in Purcell. We saw everyone at one time or another at the show! During High school I was in the girls' trio, (Norma Watson and Bonnie Wells were the other two). I sang in the chorus through junior high and high school. In junior high I played clarinet in the "PHS Marching 100" under Don Joseph.I played and marched in the band in Junior High when we went to Memphis, then, I got to go to New Orleans with the band because the trio performed with the band at the Mardi Gras. I was a "B" student in most things except for the arts. I worked on the school newspaper and was privileged to do some illustrations for the yearbook. I studied art under Mrs. Hillhouse. She encouraged me to pursue a career in art, so I studied at OU for two years and again at Eastern New Mexico University. I never finished my degree but worked as a graphic designer (mostly at Transcript Press in Norman) for over 30 years. I retired in December of 2008. I married Vic Wilkerson in June of 1961. Some of you will remember we dated all through high school. He went to Oklahoma Military Academy. He's Patsy and Mark Pearson's first cousin. Vic and I parented three children, Mandy, Patty and Ted. ed in 1990. He was a section chief at Tinker AFB and retired in 1993. Vic passed away last May. All of the children live close by and look after me. I have four grandchildren, two girls and two boys. The older two are in their twenties and the younger two are eight and five years of age. I am still adjusting to retirement and widowhood. I am a Christian and have a strong faith in God. I have many hobbies and like to keep busy. I had to give up singing but continue to enjoy my artwork. I still love music and am very fond of classical music. My sister, Pat, and I like to attend plays and musical programs. I like to play cards and board games. I have a small vegetable garden, and I love flowers of all kinds. I like to read. Besides my Bible I read biography, fiction, classics and some westerns. I like movies of course. I knit, crochet and sew. I love to swim. I went to the 2011 reunion and had an enjoyable time. I just returned from Carlsbad, New Mexico. I visited the caverns and the Living Desert. We were there for a family reunion and enjoyed the 4th of July festivities. The desert is very dry this year. None of the cactus were in bloom. I always wanted to be a n artist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. Painting and drawing are still fun for me. I try to honor Jesus Christ with my work.
