Ellis's Story

When I was a Jr. in high school, I already had my life plans set in concrete. I wanted to own a dairy farm and also raise horses. During high school I had a horse(Geronimo), raised two calves(Ferdinand & Buster Brown), had one milk goat(Ma), 20 chickens, 2 roosters(Speck and Ol' Tom), & 300 quail. I was busy before and after school. I did this from the 9th grade to the summer before my senior year. Then my Mother wanted to move into town, so they bought a house in Hyde Park. After living in the country, with all the animals, I didn't like that move at all. We had lived out on south Linwood, in a two story white house, 10 acres of land and a thousand acres of woods. To move to a subdivision was a culture shock! I went and got a job as a Life Guard at Meadowlake Country Club. I also gave swimming lessons. Larry Alexander came out to the pool and man could he dive! He was excellent diver and swimmer. Later, I went to work with Pete Howard Painters for the rest of the summer. In Feb. 1964 the Beatles came to America...nothing else mattered after that! I got bit by the entertaining bug. I have done other things like working at Brookshire Brothers and 5 years at La. Bank and Trust, but I prefer entertaining. I started playing drums and soon I had my own band. Someone asked, "How do you keep a band going?", I replied, "Keep their mouths full and make money." That's when I started booking and handling the business. My bands were: The Empty Hearts, The Back Alley, The Rogue Show ( we played almost all the dances at WHS from 1971-1974. I was told there are 5 photos of the Rogue Show in the 1972 Accolade), Bittercreek, La., and our current endeavor, Butch and Jean. I moved to OKC in 1980. I was Stallion Manager for 4 major farms, specializing in Throughbred and Racing Quarter Horses. I have worked for two of the best trainers in the world, D.Wayne Lukas and Jack VanBerg, the #1 and #3 trainers in North America. In 1985 in OKC, I was at Quail Valley Farms. I delivered 75 foals and bred 80 mares. Quite a busy year! In the 80s & 90s I was also a DJ on the radio, as well as talent in 16 TV commercials. I was also the voice of "Mousecot", animated mouse for the Taco Mayo Chain in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Arkansas. Robert Goulet came to OKC and Channel 2 had a Robert Goulet song contest. All you had to do was call the station and sing part of one of his songs. Mr. Goulet would pick out the best four. I called in on Sunday, Channel 2 called me Monday and Tuesday morning I was on TV participating in the contest. The other three finalists were excellent singers. I used my Mexican comedy character's (Chevy Fender) voice. Curt Autry, anchor for Channel 2, said that Robert Goulet picked mine because it was original, entertaining and funny. And to think, I did it as a joke! I moved to Nashville in 1993. Then two of the biggest things in my life happened in 1995...I interviewed Willie Nelson and met my true love, Jean, when I was doing my daily radio show. Jean and I were married in 1999 and we have an entertainment act called "Butch and Jean", we do original comedy & music. Butch has been my lifelong nickname. Our first CD enabled us to go to Europe for 16 days. We went to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Liverpool, and ended in Scotland. While in Liverpool for 3 days, we saw everything that had to do with the Beatles. WOW! The Anne Frank house was smaller than we thought. To think of the fear those poor people lived under. We were planning a second trip when 9-11 happened. Needless to say we cancelled. We didn't want to take a chance flying overseas. Do you remember how scary the Cuban missile crisis was? My daddy was in the Army and he was at the missile base in Stonewall. He later told me that the missile base was on full alert for over 3 weeks. He was unable to come home during that time. He said this was the closest that US and Russia came to a war. My English teacher, Susie Whittaker had all of us practicing getting under our desks. I don't believe those desks would have helped at all. Did you ever eat at Frenchies Bar-B-Que? Me too! Remember driving on Linwood and going by Sunbeam Bread? Smell so goooood! Remember Southern Maid Donuts?...HOT HOT HOT after 4 o'clock!!! Remember Bowen's Market (Fred Bowen) on Old Mansfield Rd? What about Andrews' Market (Charlie Andrews)? I remember three barbershops (not hairstylists) on our side of town, Johnny Long's, Horton's, and Formby's. Some men's hair dressings were: Vitalis, Wild Root Creme Oil (you better get Wild Root Creme Oil, Charlie), Southern Rose, Lucky Tiger, & Brylcreme ( Brylcreme, a little dab will do ya, Brylcreme, you'll look so debonair, Brylcreme, the gals will all pursue ya, They'll love to run their fingers through your hair.) Remember eating fresh Devil Dogs at the Brookwood market across from Southern Hills School? Remember KEEL radio...Buddy Blake, Rusty Reynolds? The Keel Mythical Pool each summer day, sounded like it was being broadcast from a swimming pool full of people. I won a "name it and claim it" on Keel in 1963. The song was "The End Of The World" by Skeeter Davis. The next day at school Pam Reid came up to me and told me how much she liked that song and could she please have it. I told her yes. When I got the 45rpm and gave it to her. She said "Thanks". She has never spoken to me since. Ha! On Saturday nights, on Keel, was the Griff Roberts' Saturday Night Fiasco. Griff Roberts' was actually Bob Gr...Expand for more
iffin, the weatherman on TV. All class rings came through Given's Jewelers. When's the last time you had a "Muffy" from Fertitta's? Remember when theme for "The Stripper" was cool at school! What about a stop at Burger Chef or Griff's? When was the last time you went to or swam in Crystal Lake? Let's go get a Bar-be-que Po'Boy and a Frosty Root Beer at Cobb's Bar-be-que on Kings Highway. I was introduced to Herby K's in 1963, Mr. Herby was still there. Inside or curb service. El Chico was about the only restaurant opened on Sunday evening. Picccadilly Pizza House was THE home of Italian food. How about some KoKoMo Drive-In onion rings? TV went off at 9:00pm on Sundays. All Pak-A-Saks turned into 7-11s. Remember the "Fil-A-Bil" stores? All night market, "Keep Happy Market"- chicken fly high, chicken fly lo, chicken that fly to "Keep Happy" fly no mo'! Remember...whether you say Bealls or Bells...? In 1966 all US soft drink makers began using corn syrup instead of sugar. Go to a Mexican Market and buy a Mexican Coke made with real sugar. They cost a little more, but how long has it been since you had a real Coke? In Dublin, Texas is the only Dr. Pepper plant that still makes Dr. Pepper with Domino sugar. You can order these on line. How good! There were two newspapers, Shreveport Times (AM)and the Shreveport Journal (PM). Our mayor was Clyde Fant. The word Esso seemed like a friend, the word EXXON seems sinster. Ever go horseback riding at Murrell's Stables or Dixie Gardens? Remember "Buddy" the chimp out at Hamel's Dairy & Zoo? He was an ornery old chimp! Haynes Grill on Youree Drive use to have a special...all you can eat fried catfish for $2.95. A lot of my friends went there often. In 1963-64 the city trolleys in Shreveport ran on electricity but were changed to diesel. Ernie Payne's Daddy was the last one to drive an electric trolley down Linwood Ave. At 70th Street and Mansfield Rd used to be a Weingarten's Market and the Sunset Drive In. Everyone went to the Dairy Queen. I haven't had another VDP or Cherry Coke that was as good as the ones from the Dairy Queen. Do you remember Nick's Drive In on Linwood? I had several friends from Fair Park High School that loved the K&N Drive In on Linwood. The Fair Park Cafe served "Grandma Style Food"...um um good! Did you ever go to Southland Park and hear The Catalina's? Remember the "N Twist"? Danny Webb, lead guitar, Larry Jamison, rhythm guitar/vocalist, Bengie Burnett, drums, and Jimmy Savelle, bass guitar. The band changed their name to The Rhythm Masters. A little later John Barlish replaced Larry Jamison, Tommy Bradford replaced Bengy Burnett, and Johnny Bean replaced Jimmy Savelle. Both bands were really good. Remember the Ol' Gator Dragstrip on Mansfield Rd., almost Keithville? Have you ever spent a Friday or Saturday night roller skating at the Keithville Skating Rink? It was a great place to meet other people our age. Do you remember when you first saw a real 1964 1/2 Mustang? I saw one in the school parking lot just when they came out, it was yellow with yellow interior. I thought they were beautiful. Several of my friends had Corvairs... Stanley Davis had a red 1964 convertible Monza. Peggy Osborne drove a steel blue Monza. I drove a 1963 black VW, Fred Stuck drove a VW convertible, Jane Cantrell drove a tan Fairlane 500, with her name painted on the driver's door, Moss McCalister drove a Chevy Two station wagon. Barry DeBroeck (Sr.62) had the coolest 1940 Ford Coupe. It was blue with flames of several shades of blue on the hood. Our 1941 Ford Limo reminds me of his car(see photos). Chester Duncan had a 1939 green Dodge Coupe. James Scott had a hot red 1955 Ford. Wayne Judd had a "rose-colored"1957 Chevy(with a NSC Demon head hanging from his rear view mirror), Mr. McKinnon drove a 1950's Nash and a 1950 Chevy pickup. Judy Bridges drove a gold, 1963 Rambler American, Judith Bordelon drove a 1964 Impala, Big Al McClaran(FPHS-64) drove a 1958 rose colored Chevy Impala. Danny Farmer had a 1957 tan Chevy pickup, and Buddy Warren drove a red 1959 Mercury. Gloria Blaylock drove a white Cutlass convertible. John Barlish drove a 1963 black Impala, Tommy Mason had a gold 1962 Impala, how cool! John L. Clayton rode a Cushman and Charles Lunsford rode a red All State motor scooter. Henry Cudo had a HOT Dodge with hand controls. Charles Odom drove a 1962 white Ford Galaxie, but he didn't need a radio in his car, because Charles was an excellent singer. We doubled dated a couple of times and he knew all of the songs on the radio...what fun! One of his girl friends told me that she didn't like his singing...it took away from all the smoochin' ! Cars today just don't have the same charisma. In 1973 gas went up for the first time, from 31.9 to 43.9 a gallon. I took a photo of the sign showing the new prices. I thought the price might go back down and I wanted to show how high the price had gotten up to. Funny thing, it has never gone back down! Look in "Money for nothin" photo album to see photo. I remember Trey Prather, what a cool guy! He always drove a beautiful, red Ford Galaxie XL. Best quarterback that there has ever been. No telling how big he would have become in football and life... so sad. Humanity missed out! Whatever happened to these football players, Billy Laird, Wayne Davis, Joe Geter, and Tommy Linder? Joe Geter, was first left handed quarterback I had ever seen. I'll write more later...
