Emerson's Story

Life Graduated from Fred Douglass in May 1965. I worked the summer of 1965 at Peacock Crate Factory before enrolling at Prairie View A&M in the Fall of 1965. I attended PV from 1965 to May 1969 graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Arrived in Kansas City, Missouri on June 3, 1969 to work for the Bendix Corporation (now Honeywell). Retired from Bendix in 1997 after 28 years of service. I currently Live with my wife of 34 years just south of Kansas City, Missouri in the small city of Grandview, Missouri. My wife and I have 2 wonderful daughters, 31 and 29 years old, who both live in Indiana. I also have another wonderful daughter, 36 years old, that lives in Kansas City. School I had a crush for years on one of the band majorettes in my class. The teacher that inspired me the most was a tie between Mr. Davis (Band) and Mr. Johnson (Math). If I could do it all over again, I would not change a thing about my high school experience. My funniest memory --- getting sick on a roller-coaster ride in my band uniform after marching in a Rusk parade. My happiest memory --- graduation day May 1965. My craziest memory --- driving my dad's blue & white '58 Ford with a jacked-up automatic transmission (didn't have a reverse gear and had to park on an incline in order to roll backwards without drawing a lot of attention). ge I applied to Prairie View in 1965 to major in Engineering after being advised by an Air Force recruiter--- that visited Fred Douglass my Senior year and administered some kind of standardized academic achievement test---that I was "good" at Math. My college experience was less memorable than high school although a lot of things happened around me between September 1965 and May 1969 --- Viet Nam, Civil Rights movement, Dr. King's assasination, Draft Board lottery numbers, and more. I was a decent college student and graduated in 4 years and one summer with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Math. Workplace I've had one job in my professional life---28 years at the Bendix Corporation (now Honeywell Inc) in a variety of positions from Associate Engineer to Program Engineering Manager. I've been retired since 1997. For the last 10 years, I have been involved in my community as a volunteer, tutor, mentor, freelance sports reporter, and newsletter editor & publisher. My business interests include real estate investing and administrative & management services. Finally, I am an active Fred Douglass Class of 1965 alumnus. Military Other than ROTC in college, I have had no military service. I received an occupational deferrment in 1969 for being employed by a Department of Defense contractor (Bendix).
