Eneida's Story

Update #2 - November 2012 It has been almost 2 years since I lost my job as a travel agent. It had never bothered me before since I was always able to bounce back within a month or two. After six months, more than 50 resumes, and no call backs for interviews, now I was worried! Everything had changed . . . my many years of experience were not enough to compete. So I returned to college. Interestingly enough . . . I live 2 minutes away from a local community college. I figured I could get a degree in what I knew best . . . Business Administration. I am tired of moving from one job to another and not improving on my salary (in the past 10 years, I haven't earned more than $35,000 annually). The last time I made $35,0000 I was 30 years old!!! The great thing about returning to college is I actually enjoy it!! I feel like I am accomplishing something and being rewarded for the "work" that I am doing. Yes, I don't get paid for it but it is an education that no one can take away from you. I not only am doing well (3.9 GPA) but am Vice President of our local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, a Program Assistant for our Student Admission Ambassador Program, and President of a newly created student club called Top of the Hill for returning and non-traditional students like myself. I have also been nominated for the Coca-Cola and All USA Today national scholarships (only two from each community college are nominated to compete). I have been a role model for the tradtional students who are either not sure what they want to study in school or are being made to go to college by their parents. I tell them how hard it is to compete with just a high school diploma and even harder since they are young with little or no experience. I encourage them to go as far as they can go, to "participate" in college instead of just attend class, to make connections within the school and the community. These are the people who are going to remember you and be the network that will not only get you a good job but an amazing career! I am scheduled to graduate with an Associates Degree in May 2012. I will continue to pursue my Bachelors Degre...Expand for more
e, just don't know which school to go to (so many want me ! ; - ) ). I am also considering getting my Masters. There are so many options now with a Business degree . . . International Business, Healthcare Management, Women's Studies, etc. I will eventually have to get a job in between school "gigs" but they will be just be stepping stones. I have already been encouraged to return to the college to work in the Admissions Dept. or as an instructor. Let me know who's out there. Feel free to email me. ======================================================================================= Life Let's just say I became the "Jane of All Trades". Whatever I put my mind to, I did. Sometimes . . . not too happily. I did put in 1 year of college (spread out over several colleges) towards a degree in psychology and hoping to create educational materials and programs for children with learning disabilities. Well, I strangely ended up in the legal field as a paralegal because it paid well (I told you I was "Jane of All Trades"). I did that for almost 18 years !! - - until Sept. 11th. My husband and I decided that Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn was too close to ground zero and the neighborhood was becoming too increasingly crowded. So I find myself transmitting to you from Middletown, New York - - approximately 75 miles north of NYC in lovely Orange County. Best of both worlds - - we are within a mile of wonderful green farmland with animals and fresh produce and the other side of that mile is the mall, shopping, and movie theaters. When we want to be "cultured", we take a day trip to the City. After moving here 8 years ago, I again was stuck working in another law firm. I opened up my own event planning company, Elaborate Affairs, but after five years and the most recent economic downfall, I had to close shop. I am now employed as an assistant manager for a travel agency. Which leads me to ask this question . . . is anybody out there the oldest person at your job ?! I keep getting these new hires who are all under 30, who find any excuse not to work. Feel free to connect with me. Life's too short . . . we can't have enough old/new friends!
