Eric's Story

Rensselaer was not the most fun place to get a degree (in Math). I started out in the middle of the pack of math majors, but by the time I graduated, the bottom half had either dropped out or switched to an easier major. I understand RPI has since abandoned their "survival of the fittest" approach and now actually tries to help struggling students. In the fine tradition of our NHS fifty miler, I spent a week's spring break driving down and back with three other Rensselaer Outing Clubbers from Troy, NY past Mexico City to climb Pico de Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico and third highest in North America. Any claim to fame for me has all been down hill since then. Barely got into grad school (in Statistics) at Texas A&M. Quite a culture shock down there, but for the good. Was "adopted" by my roommate's family and spent weekends in the hill country above San Antonio. Got my masters, then put in my two years as an ROTC officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, my last year in Vietnam building roads and bridges. I was in five mortar attacks, but mostly it felt like I was in the Peace Corps! Liked the locals and look forward to going back for a visit. Went to grad school at Colorado State after the Army, and landed a job in Denver as a statistician in the Colorado Highway Safety Division. Then a long stint as a planner/program evaluator/policy-budget analyst in the Governor's Budget Office and finally as Admin Chief for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. I'm now retired, married to a perky, outdoorsy gal I met on a canoe trip to the Minnesota-Ontario Boundary Waters I led with the Colorado Mt. Club. We continue to backpack, ski, ride horses and canoe - this summer we're hiking the Inca Trail in Peru to Machu Pichu. In addition to our regular jobs we started three different outdoor adventure companies along the way: Canoe Country Escapes - guided canoe trip...Expand for more
s in the Boundary Waters, Colorado Adventure Network - offering various types of trips through 20 different outfitters, and finally a successful one - Old West Dude Ranch Vacations - with 24 participating ranches. We have two grown sons, the first an electrical engineer with Toshiba who flies around North America repairing and upgrading power plants and the second an aquaculturalist (fish farmer)working for Oregon State University on their coast developing new hybrids of oysters. We're both retired now, though I've been a part time enumerator and recruiter for the US Census for the last two years. You may remember me as often being "on" in promoting Durland Boat Co., candidates in NHS elections, etc. Well the other day I was approaching folks as they were entering the library and telling them about the great Census jobs that were available at $16.75 an hour. One young man asked if this sort of work was available every year and I responded "No, only every 10 years. I'm 64 now so I may not have the energy to do this when I'm 74." Having been victimized by my enthusiastic recruiting approach he replied "Oh, you will. You will." Our family used to love boating/camping trips up on Lake George, so my folks started looking for some waterfront property up there. It was prohibitively expensive, but one of our boat customers recommended a lake in Canada just west of the Thousand Islands. My folks bought a piece of property on an island up there and later built a small cabin. Now that we're retired, a highlight of our summers is to paddle the canoe we keep on the mainland over to the island and open up the cabin for a couple months. It has everything you would ever need - electricity, phone, and indoor plumbing. Not to mention great fishing and a small fleet of Durland Boat Co. rowboats, canoes and sailboats. Rural Ontario is a whole different place - life is good!

What a treat to see.
What's wrong with this leaf-raking picture?
An enterprising gentleman from another neighborhood knocked on our door today asking if we'd like our leaves raked. We took him up on it, and the three of us did a darned good j
