Eric's Story
How would I describe myself? Don't even get me started! The thumbnail sketch of Eric Hamilton is a composite picture of Peter Pan, morphed toward Grumpy Old Men. My life seems to be a series of events which may sometimes appear outwardly noteable but ultimately left me feeling remarkably unfulfilled. I have never been married, but am familiar with the agony of love. I do not have any children, yet have experienced the pride of a parent. I have held impressive job titles, yet have never felt my potential had been reached. I have never felt close to my family, yet feel great loss at their absense. Many friends hold me in high regard, but it is rare that I view others so generously.
My cynacism has pushed my to a degree of isolation, as I have discovered that being alone does not necessarily mean you have to be lonely. Betrayal, or poor judgement of "friends," has made me very self-sufficient emotionally. I realize that circumstances sometimes require deviation from plans, and that flexibilty and the ability to adapt are vital for my survival. As such, my plans for the ...Expand for more
future do not generally include others, just as I do not let myself become involved in others dreams. My battles are my own, and while I have taken the fight for others causes, I ask for no assistance with my own.
I believe that the lack of a destination should not interfere with forward progress, and that the journey is worthwhile even if you lose your way. I have learned to prepare for adversity while staying focused upon the goal. I have learned that respect is earned through listening (especially with children) instead of commanding, as respect is generally received only in amounts it is given. I have to remind myself that whatever makes me angry will probably be forgotten within a short period, but the result of my reaction may influence others much longer. I try to view others as they view themselves, without prejudice or animosity.
Most of all in my life, I look at my past without regret or disdain. I can be my own worst critic if I let myself. I have experienced how a very small effort on my part can affect the happiness of others in a degree I never imagined.
