Eric's Story

Ghosts and memories..30yrs just yesterday, or was it long ago? Did everyone grow up but me? Life at RMHS could fill a book but of course the book is thrown back as my kids write their own hair raising tales. (hair graying more likely) High school began sadly with the death of my mother and ended badly when Dipell and I locked horns at graduation but the middle was sweet; good people, great times, growing up in the 70s. I still remember the girls I adored, the pals I ran with and all that highly classifed crazy stuff we did. Asperations of barrister set aside, I became a wrench followed by a decade of photography. I had many successes as a photojournalist and a few failures, it wasn't about the money 'cause there wasn't much. When the kids started coming, they came first, so I moved into cooking; french, italian and chinese. By accident (or fleeing a broken heart) I wound up at an airline, where I've been ever since, a wrench once more. I have two wonderful sons, one in HS, the other studying photojournalism in Pittsburgh. Raising them has been the greatest road I've ever walked. My dad still lives in Rockville, when I go past RM it all looks so different. Pizza Oven and Little Pigs are gone, but the source of my sustanance, liquid ...Expand for more
and solid, Shakee's still stood last I saw. I travel considerably, but still seek the path less traveled. Sicily and my place I just sold in British Columbia, my favorites. Before sinility sets in (ok gets worse) I still need to sail the Greek Isles, hike the Serengeti and retrace Che Guevera's motorcycle ride. Divorced a year now, I find something lacking without someone to share that amazing view, to feel the rain together in a Parisian cafe and not care. AP History with Butler lit a fire of social conciousness that has inspired a lifetime of amature history reading and writing, 8yrs of warmongering under Bush made me, a father, a die-hard political activist, participating in almost every major protest on the East Coast, even briefly entering the congressional race in WV before common sense returned. The age of wisdom has been slowly (very slowly) creeping round my door, or it could just be arthritis. I just sold my 60ft sailboat and bought 15 quiet acres on a mountain. I was going to sail around the world; a bit silly when you fly everywhere for free. 30yrs. Would I go back and change a thing? Probably not but I wish I had taken more time to let those around me know what they meant to me. Ah, the sweet and the bitter. Peace.
