Eric's Story
I grew up a parochial school kid in the East Harlem projects. Went to Our Lady Queen of Angels, disguised as an altar boy. Mea culpa Sister Theresa. School and church have since closed, a real downer for the neighborhood. The nuns always described me as 'very bright but very uncontrolled'. So what - Mom still loved me!
Then the Cardinal Hayes era. Traveled these years with my best bud from grammar school - Alan Lucas - the track team high jumper. We had a pretty tight group, not causing bad blood with anyone - except the management. I had my first encounter with Fr. McCormack on day one at Hayes. Story for another time. don't get the wrong idea, I just seem to have inherited some pretty nasty karma. My friends and I thought I had the worst luck. Example. I was one of the few lucky seniors who won the driver's ed pool. Man did I have plans! That is until one day I found myself sitting in McCormack's office for one of our regular chats. I placed my books on his desk which resulted in his snatching my driver's ed book and cackling 'Not any more, buddy!' I must censor myself now, but our relationship was far from over. I guess this is a fair opening for my story.
