Eric's Story
Thought that was a pretty good story. Should I write more? I have to use a three inch magnifying glass when reading or proof-reading. Got to get those cataracts fixed!. So anyway, my next story will be about how I lived in the tunnels that empty into the L.A. River. This was for almost two years, after I got out of the Army in 1968. A future story will be about when I lived in trees at Griffith Park. Other than that, I have lived in cardboard boxes, under bridges, on the roofs of multi story buildings, in a cave I dug in the side of a hill in the Santa Monica Mountains, and in dozens of homeless shelters from New York to California. The only thing I really learned from all of this is that the best time to eat is when Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonalds closes at night. One must find a good inconspicuous place to wait when the employees take the leftovers to the dumpsters. They use plastic bags to do this, so unless there is something really gross in the bag...Expand for more
s, most of the goodies can be reclaimed. Sometimes you can find dozens of drumsticks and wings that were never served, and their buttered corn is delicious! Remember, it is important to bring your own salt and to have a place to wash up later, unless you want to sleep in a park with a greasy face all night. The key to living like this is to maintain good personal hygiene. I always washed my hands, face, and private areas, and that is important. There are always public places where one can find showers. Streams and the beach are also good . Above all else, never stay in areas where there are other homeless people. And now a word for the wise. If you are going to be homeless, try to keep a good sleeping bag handy and hide it well during the day when you are out foraging. Stay hydrated too.This is a factual story and I just realized that this would make one heck of a good movie, but I would have to direct it. Arctic Hermit
