Erik (Ernie)'s Story
Oh man, to think of all the things that have happened since we graduated. I am especially proud that my “second family” twins just turned 17 are graduating from high school, both a year early. Johanna will be going to University of Washington (the other UW) majoring in Space Sciences in hopes to work for NASA. Alex has been accepted by the University of Edinburgh, majoring in Political Science, with hopes to go into the foreign service. To think of what lies ahead of them and what they will witness in the future. I kid them about my childhood, excited to have a fire truck that the roof light actually flashed. I hope for the best for them because our world seems to be torn apart by religion and identity politics, judging a person by appearance rather than by merit and accomplishments. Dr. King would be shocked by the “content of their character” is secondary to the color of their skin. Common sense has left us with what seems continuing chaos in our schools, businesses and neighborhoods all for a political misguided ideal. I hope they have the life I had.
See you in a couple months!

I've always been an avid car guy since high school, my first car was a 1960 Karmann Ghia. I still can't figure out how Glen Menge managed to get a brand new Firebird while I drove an ugly 36 hp 1960 VW baby blue Ghia. I was totally envious of Barb Champion winning the first year new Mustang,.... jeez! I have a 1955 Jaguar XK140. A favorite of mine for many years, I remem...Expand for more
ber building a model of it as well as others, and of course fighter jets.
I can't believe I left for Pulask HS almost 55 years ago for UW-O, graduating there in '71, I then was accepted into US Air Force pilot training and flew for 6 years there. I was hired by Delta Air Lines flew there for 28 years retiring early in 2004 as an international check captain on Boeing 767ER and 757. After Delta I flew three different aircraft for one of the cofounders and CEO of Microsoft for four years, followed by flying internationally for the other cofounder of Microsoft and the then current CEO, as well additional individuals out of Seattle. I was fortunate to have enjoyed my profession immensely until now, I recently retired, but kinda traded airplanes for old cars ; ). Been lucky all throughout my life having attained what maybe some classmates remember as my lifetime ambition of becoming a pilot. In fact, John Schultz and I went down to the United employment office in Chicago for pilot applications at the age of 17 ! Elaine another retired Delta Captain and now NetJets pilot, and I have 17 year old twins, Alex and Johanna. They are graduating (a year early, they take after their mom) this year. Also have an older daughter Kirsten, who is switched careers from U of Washington athletic academic advisor to Software Engineer for Amazon. BTW, I changed my name 30+ years ago. I never cared for Ernie, (tried to change it in second grade,) so I changed it to my Norwegian heritage version, Erik.
