Ernest's Story

Two plus years ago, after practicing medicine for forty years, I decided if I hadn't figured it out by then, I should quit the practicing and retire......So I did.....However, as the better part of the Class of '66 has probably figured out by now, "If you rest, you rust!" So with that worn out cliche' in mind, I looked around for something new to do while still in the waning years of my professional career.... I had loved agriculture at Cottage Grove High. Some of you ladies may still remember how I enjoyed clumping into class still wearing my muddy(?) boots after a field trip to a local farm or dairy. I am proud to say that tradition continues!!....It has, however, been greatly modified by my wife (of 35 years), Karin. You see, I decided to start a hobby farm. So what is a hobby farm you ask? It is a place where vestiges of a rural lifestyle are maintained. Profits give way to keeping farm critters who are more pet than income producers. Produce may find its way to the local farmers' market, or in special cases, select restaurants. In my case, garden stuff and fruit goes to local family and friends. My little two acres of ground sports paddocks for three dairy goats and a buck, three hives of bees, ten chickens and about twenty fruit trees. I learned early that far more people like goat cheese (Chavre', queso blanco, kafir... Take your pick) than prefer the milk itself, so I ...Expand for more
make a lot of cheese in season. As I do not have a Grade A operation, I end up giving most of it away. All the eggs coming from my hens happen to be brown. (Certain breeds will only lay brown eggs and those are the ones I chose) Everyone raves how much better farm-fresh brown eggs are compared to the white Safeway counterparts. I don't know if this is true, but it sure has turned my hens into a bunch of narcissistic birds! Then there's the beer! Ah yes, the beer!! In the past I've made a modified honey stout and "scrumpy", an apple beer/ale. My goal this spring is to have a full year's supply of beer laid on by fall and maybe a bottle or two of mead put away (Why else do you think I got the bees!?!?) I keep telling Karin the reason I do all of this is to cut down on the scotch budget. Don't think she has bought the story. At least she knows where I am when I'm outside playing........ In order to validate all of these ventures, I've created a website. I tried to make it fun to read and you are welcome to go to.....<Purebrednubiangoats/grandpaslittlefarm.com> Take care. Take NOTHING too seriously......And remember....We are all on some sort of fixed budgets by now.... but at least a good sense of humor is still free!.....Oh yeah.....If you have grand kids, enjoy them....They are your second chance for redemption as parents (See Bill Cosby.....)
