Ernie's Story
Life
Most of you are probably wondering why I'm on this list when I actually left Lebanon after the seventh grade. I was curious what everybody was up to. I went to high school and college in Kansas and lived in Texas for a while. I lived in the Topeka, KS, area and worked at the Topeka Capital-Journal as a department editor from 2003 until the end of 2007. I lived in Virginia for two years before moving to Tulsa in September 2009.
School
I hated leaving Lebanon when my family moved after seventh grade, but it turned out well. Our class was small at 36 people, but half of us went on to earn college degrees. A pretty damn good ratio.
College
I started at Kansas State. First year was OK, then I hated it and left within the first week of my second year. Eventually ended up at Washburn, a private school in Topeka.
The only thing I regret about college is that I didn't take a risk and go to some others schools that a...Expand for more
dmitted me (Missouri, USC, TCU).
I remember friends and people from college, not drinking eight kegs a weekend and throwing up for two days. I partied every once and awhile, but not like a lot of people.
Workplace
I was fortunate to have a job before I left college. It was a small paper, the Independence (Kan.) Daily Reporter.
I left there after 14 months for a job at the Emporia (Kan.) Gazette, another small afternoon paper.
I finally caught a break after 20 months in Emporia, as I landed a job at the McAllen (Texas) Monitor, a 55,000-circulation paper. I was the assistant sports editor there for 14 months.
I caught another break last August, landing a job as a sports copy/slot editor at the Topeka Capital-Journal. I was promoted to Page 2 editor/project team leader in June 2006.
I worked as an assistant sports editor at the Newport News Daily Press before moving back to the Midwest to work at the Tulsa World.
