Esther Chambliss:

CLASS OF 1968
Newark, NJ

Esther's Story

I finally joined the 21st century, and I'm trying to live, and enjoy life! I'm not good at talking about myself, but here it goes: ( I bet you all din't know I'm really kinda shy?) After high school, I went to the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and after 2 years, I came home to Jersey 'cause it was tooo cold for me, plus, talk about culture shock-I was 1 of 36 black students in the entire city! Remember, it was 1968. I started working at the VA in Newark NJ, and after 39 years, I'm still there! (and I'm still lookin'Good, too!) While working, I attended Rutgers University-Newark (University College)at night, full time, and graduated, with honors, in 1978 with a BA degree in Sociology.(Imagine that!) I did some graduate work, but didn't finish. (Some of the teachers would be sooo proud of me, since I was a clown in class-sometimes) In 1981, I was blessed with the birth of my son, Corey, who I love dearly. He's a hard-working, tall, handsome young man, (if I must say so myself),who has a job and benefits, so all single ladies, (under 35 please), submit your bio for my review and approval! (LOL)( I hope he doesn't read this 'cause he has a girlfriend..) Anyway, I am truly blessed by God, and I pray for continued health and strength so I can be around for several more years. oted my life to my family and friends, and now it's time to do ME! (Yes, I'm single and lookin'!) I love going to the movies, traveling with my friends, and visiting with my best friend in the whole world: My Mom... She's in a nursing home now suffering from dementia. I thank God everyday for her life, and the sacrifices, love, and encouragement she gave to me, my brothers, and other family members throughout the years. As most of you know, she was active at South Side in the PTA, and attended many of my brother Charlie's basketball games. She was affectionately known as Mom Chamby by many of the players. She is also a proud Bulldog from the Class of 1942! I am in the process of penning some of my experiences as a caregiver, and the things that go on in nursing homes, and one day, you may hear those famous words," And the Oscar for Best Documentary goes to: Esther Chambliss!" Retirement is not in my future yet, but I hope to do more traveling in the near future. I would love to hear from more Bulldogs, so please, keep in touch. I'll be posting pictures as soon as my son shows me how! Have you thanked God for life today? Tomorrow is not promised-Celebrate Life! Oh, in that "celebration", please DO NOT ask me to do any more cheerleading ever again!(The knees are startin' to act up!)
