Eugene's Story
Life
My goal after graduating BTHS was to attend the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Md (you know, the one in the Army-Navy game every year). But, my average grades kept me from getting a Nomination from our Congressman/Senator and Appointment. After several discussions with the Academy staff and staff at our congressman's office, I discovered I had just missed the cut.
I rolled the dice a bit and paid to go to a military prep school in southern Texas. The Marine Military Academy. It is a mix of high school and one "post graduate" year to help with acceptance to any of the countryÂs military academies. It paid off and in 1982 I entered the Naval Academy has a "plebe".
I graduated in 1986 with a BS in Oceanography. I volunteered for specialized training in Nuclear Power and Submarine warfare. After graduation I spent about 18 months between Orlando Florida, Balston Spa New York, and Groton Connecticut receiving the necessary training to operate nuclear reactors and drive nuclear submarines.
Between 1989 and 1994 I served on various submarines and submarine staffs in the Seattle and San Diego areas (not as fun as the Hunt for Red October, but exciting none the less). The navy brought me to interesting places such as the North Pole (surfaced through the ice in 199...Expand for more
1), Guam, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Spain, Italy, Aleutian Islands and many foreign coasts that I only saw via periscope.
I met my then future wife Beth in Feb 1993. Deciding that the life of a submariner was not the life I wanted for a family, I left the navy in the summer of 1994 and moved to Fairfax, Virginia taking my first "civilian" job in 12 years. I worked for TRW doing defense engineering work (traded a steel submarine for working in a dark vault with no windows.
In Oct 1994 I married Beth Uhrin in Newport, Rhode Island. We continued to live in Virginia until 1997. I then made a career change into Telecom Sales (I had been studying for a masters in telecommunications systems engineering at the time and it seemed like a logical idea). The job required a move back to San Diego. We couldn't pack our bags fast enough.
Since then I've changed companies several times, but am still in telecom sales. I work for Alcatel, a large French company (currently buying Lucent) and I handle sales to mobile phone operators on the west coast.
I have two girls. Emily b. 1999. Erin b. 2002 (I'm too old for this). They keep me busy with swim lessons, gymnastics, soccerÂ

Looking forward to the reunion. We will most likely make the trip cross country.
