Eugene's Story

My bio from the College's web site sums it all up. I know it sounds pretentious, but frankly, it was easier for me to cut and paste their promo piece than writing something new: Dr. Cornacchia made history when he was appointed in May 2007 as the first lay president in the College's 135-year history. When he was introduced at a May 12 news conference Dr. Cornacchia noted he was a product of Jesuit education and stressed his presidency will be "always committed to the Jesuit mission at Saint Peter's, New Jersey's only Jesuit College." As the College's Academic Dean and then as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Cornacchia worked collaboratively with campus constituencies to implement initiatives that increased enrollment while significantly raising academic standards. He also provided leadership that strengthened the college's liberal arts curriculum and created many new program offerings, enhanced faculty research and grant efforts, improved services to students by implementing more than $10 million in capital projects, and expanded funding for Division I athletics and intramurals. rior to moving into the College's administration in 2000, Dr. Cornacchia was a highly respected member of the faculty. He joined the College as an adjunct lecturer in 1981 and was appointed full professor in 1997. He served 14 years as the Chair of the Political Science Department and also served two terms as Faculty Senate President. He spent five years heading the College's Guarini Center for International and Public Affairs. Dr. Cornacchia received numerous honors during his teaching career, including a Fellowship on the Academic Profession in 1989 from the New Jersey Department of Higher Education. He also won several of Saint Peter's top awards, including the 1999 Johnson Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Cornacchia, 53, received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1976 and a master's degree in political science in 1979 from Fordham University. He also earned his Ph.D. in political science (with a focus on Urban, Ethnic and Electoral Politics) from Fordham University in 1985. Dr. Cornacchia and his wife, AnnMarie, recently relocated from Westchester County to Guarini House, the president's residence on the college's Jersey City campus. They have two daughters, Lauren, an accountant, and Katherine, a sophomore at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
