Eugene Gene's Story

My story will have to begin with a remembrance to my best friend at North High School, Rocky Watkins, we lost him in 1971, in our junior year, to an act of senseless violence, Last day of class, my junior year. Walking off campus, I decided to emulate my favorite Author "Jack Kerouac" and hit the "open road". So, no money, no good byes and just the clothes on my back, starting out, right then and there.. I hitched-hiked all the way to the up I-395, to the Canadian Border, Along the way, I joined up with a number Conscientious Objectors, objecting to being drafted to fight in Vietnam, That is how I spent my summer vacation. Stopping off at the West Coast Woodstock outdoor Rock Festival held in Washington State. I would not recommend any young lad to follow in my footsteps, but glad I made the journey. After such an E-Ticket adventure, I just couldn't see myself back at school, I was hooked on experiencing life♠, So, I Join the Marines, at seventeen, to beat the whole teenage run-away wrap,, only to serve in Vietnam. Talk about irony. I do recall thinking, at the time ,if I have to fight for my very existence in High School, I might as well get paid for it. .I have to say in all candor, after three years at John W., a year in Vietnam, was a walk in the park. Just wishing my friend Rocky could have been around to join me. I did managed to make up all the classes, I needed grad...Expand for more
uate High School, in 1973, via the Dept of Defense, High School, in a Combat Zone, in between mortar attacks. Then stationed at the Marine Base at El Toro, Ca, So, I was home every weekend, for the next three years. I finished my first two years of college at Pepperdine Univ. Malibu , compliments of the Marines,, finished the last two years towards my BA at the Univ of Oklahoma compliments of the G.I; Bill, a quid pro quo, sort of speak.. Somehow, I managed to travel to over a dozen foreign countries, with one job or another, but have to say, nothing can compare to right where I started in Riverside, it will always be home sweet home to me.. The job I like the best was in 2003, during Operation Iraci Freedom, as a College Professor for the Navy, serving aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson, I had the privilege to teach some the finest young men and women, I ever met, serving our country, during time of war. Wow!, Talk about full circle. Well, that's my story. Currently my hobby is writing or more of a passion really. Just finished a short story more specifically a Ghost Story. I think of particular interest to anyone in the general area, where we went to school. My story centers around a haunted house in 1967. You may very well have passed by it, as the Jurupa Junior high school Bus Stop was just out front of it. Plan to have it published in the Local Papers for Halloween.
