People ask if I’m retired. “No, just tired!”
2018 Update-
First of all, thank you to all of those who supported and – or attended our 50th reunion. And my maybe not so humble opinion, it seemed like the best one yet as classmates so warmly commingled and so generously shared with one another. Play small but mighty reunion committee did a yeoman's job planning and executing the entire weekend.
Well, life certainly sends us surprising curveballs! Little did I imagine that my education, legal, real estate, fundraising & interiordedign careeers would lead me to start Mattey's Mutts in January 2018. Far from mesring retirement, I sm knee deep in launching my new business, designing & manufacturing custom made, unique handled pet harnesses & leashes. The website will launch soon. Please visit & like MatteysMutts on Facebook.
Life - October 2016;
My husband Al Gerisch's retirement as managing partner of LaFollette Johnson in Downtown LA precipitated selling our home in Sherman Oaks& moving to La Quinta,CA full time. It was an emotional move leaving behind our neighborhood, friends, hobbies etc. -but not the horrendous traffic that no longer has designated hours.
I'm not ready for retirement, making the rounds to reroot elg design, in Coachella Valley from Palm Springs to Indio. It's like a big small town here with a strong sense of community, gorgeous vistas, & a philanthropic population supportive of causes from saving animals from shelters to aids, cancer & childhood illnesses & programs.
It's a bit schizophrenic -a burgeoning population of parttime owners, visitors & locals from October-April. A host of art & ethnic festivals, cultural activities, entertainment & food options, golf & tennis tourneys, hiking, Fashion Week, Modernism Week offer more than you manage!
By June when the thermometer reaches 100+ daily thru September & can stay that way until midnight, only locals remain. Those that can take trips anywhere cooler. It's that time of year when I miss LA
Life - January 15, 2008:
Another year! Entertainment law practice is scaled way back, as I launched elg design in 2007 & returned to school, studying Interior Design. I have Laurel Sternberg (MKHS '67) to thank for my first client. Talk about doing a 180'! I'm also teaching law at UCLA Extension since 1998 & have done stints in professional fundraising & as principal of Levin Realty, the latter of which I currently use for personal transactions & for referrals to match buyers/sellers with quality agents. Should I refer you to an agent in your area, I get a referral commission, part of which I refund to you, Good deal? Let's talk! Never could sit still....Whew!
Brothers Stan ('63)& Barry ("64)& their families are all fine - 2 kids each, stepkids, grandkids, step grandkids. Mom Rose is still a gorgeous pistol at 83, living in Rancho Mirage. Lost my dad, Marshall, to cancer in '78. No kids of my own, my husband, Allan (married 09/18/05) has 2 sons, 28 & 24. Mattey, my dog, is my "kid".

All in all life is good, just too hectic in this electronic age. I long for the '50's when we rode our bikes & could walk to the park alone, safely. When most us had dinner as a family at a regular hour & sat around the b/w TV for "The Womderful World of Disney" and "You Bet Your Life". I appreciate the era in which we grew up. Life was simpler, we had time for each other, could 'uni-task', & weren't pressured to grow up so quickly or be 'wunderkind' at 7 months old, to beat out our collega competition 17 years later.
I'm a lifelong Bruin fan & show up annually at UCLA's homecoming games, donning my Yell Team sweater from my UCLA days that gains me entry onto the field to cheer on UCLA's alumni fans in the stands. It's great fun, although the friendships I made as a member of Keppel's Yell team are far more meaningful.
Being 'skinny' as kid paid off in adulthood, along with having a calorie-burning energy & maintaining a reasonably healthy diet (no red meat, no cow dairy, no 3 meals daily - but I MUST have my chocolate!), Knee issues put a stop to high-impact activities, but I was really too cold skiing & burned out on aerobics anyway. We have this well-equipped home gym beckoning to me, but I don't seem to want to answer the call! Tomorrow? In the meantime, we like to hike when out of town, & I may yet scuba dive again, if I can get my husband to join me.
Like many of you, my marriage isn't my first, but it is my best. Good thing! I was already 'mature' when I married at 42 the FIRST time (yeah, yeah, what was I waiting for?) so I wouldn't make a mistake. Well, that one was toast after 3 years. I met my current husband, Allan, on matchmaker.com - for real, in 2001. If you're not in a committed relationship & you want one, don't knock online dating websites until you've given it a fair go. Take a break if it gets old/trying. Then get back in. This was my main social network on & off for several years before I met my husband. We actually got engaged while visiting Jimmy (MKHS '67) & Patti Hughes in Kauai - thanks, Jimmy, for being the catalyst!
Penny Stanford Parisi (MKHS '67) introduced me to Sweet Adelines, female barbershop-style a capella chorus singing, several years ago. I eventually joined a chapter closer to home & am now a member of RiverOaks Chorus, & see PeeJay at regional competitions & other performances (her chorus, as well as PeeJay, win awards). having always sung Alto (so always the harmondy part), I'm having a great time singing 'lead' - i.e. the melody, for the first time.If you Google RiverOaks Chorus you should find our website. Singing is a wonderful outlet, stress-reliever, & vehicle for international comomunication. If we could only sing our way through the politics that divide us & the inequities of the world.
I'm still a bleeding-heart Liberal & proud of it. As I write this, I am campaigning for John Edwards for President. If he doesn't get the Dems nomination I will support whoever does (Barack or Hillary).
OK, time to come clean about Keppel Grad Night. But you'll have to wait to hear it when I have time to write the next installment! - or contact me - you can find my contact info though the State Bar of California website by typing my name in the Attorney Search.
