Jim's Story
Clayton Valley High School is where it started.
Went to DVC until 1978, got an AA w/geology background, landed a job w/ Chevron in SF on Market Street drawing oilfield maps, Analog (Mylar, pen and ink) style. Met my wife of 32 years, Laura, on a blind date in the late 1970's and married my best friend in the early 1980's. Transferred to Sohio Petroleum in SF for a few years. Got bored of drafting, took a big leap of faith and went back to school in the early 1980's at UC Santa Cruz where I got a BS in geology (the only BS program on campus at the time). Continued right on into Grad School at SJSU where I got a MS in Geology in the late 1980's, then segued into geotechnical consulting work up and down the San Francisco Peninsula. Economy tanked in the mid-90's, got laid off and hung out my own shingle for a while as my own man (Terra Nova Consulting - It was a whole New World for sure, chasing the jobs and then chasing the clients to get paid, haha!)
Things were pretty tight because my wife had gone back to Grad School also. A job offer in the mid-1990's came thru just in time w/the CA Geological Survey up in Fortuna and I landed it (I didn't expect to get it, so I was r...Expand for more
elaxed and interviewed well, haha!) They loved me and I've been a field-oriented Engineering Geologist working "in the woods" evaluating proposed timber harvest operations on the ground ever since, I'll keep at it until my knees give out on me - so far so good!
In 2001, My wife and I decided to turn our comfy life as DINKs on its ear, and adopted a baby girl from Chongqing, China. She's been a real fireball from day one, but loves us fiercely. She turns 11 in September and is ready for High School - make-up, bling, and drama rule in our house, hooyah! She's smart as a tack and will do well in the world if we do our job well. Kind of like raising a wild mustang.
For fun: Great food, Laura is a great cook and we're both foodies - Amazing we don't look like Mr/Mrs Jabba-the-Hutt! I'm also an avid Amateur Radio operator (K6FWT). I get my thrill, not on Blueberry Hill, but restoring and operating WWII military radios. Really makes me appreciate our Vets and all they've done to keep us free.
I also finally came back to my favorite Jewish Carpenter and His Dad a few years ago, so I get help on many sides (and I need it, like most of Humanity). Peace and health to all of you!
