William's Story

I bet you never heard this story about me? While stationed in the Air Force in Italy 1985 my landlord gave my son two ducklings for his birthday. One day I went to work and a big thunderstorm came up and did it rain. At lunchtime I went home and when I arrived I noticed that the box with the little ducklings was under the drain spout for the water running off the roof. Both little ducklings were under water and water was rushing into the box. It had been raining for almost one and half hours. I was looking at the poor little ducklings in the box and thinking the worst. I picked them up and took them inside the house and laid them on the side of the sink in the kitchen. What was I going to tell my son when he comes home from school? Their little heads were now hanging off the edge of the sink, when my police training kicked in, "CPR". What, on a duck? How? This is nuts. I first looked out the window to ensure no one outside could see me but there was no one there, of course. I then picked up the first duck, held it upside down and a little water came out of its bill. I gave it a little squeeze and a little more water came out. Laid it down and picked up the second one and did the same with it. Still no reaction from the little ducks. Picked up the first duck again then thought direct CPR was needed. Held my fingers on the end of its bill and blew air gently through the nose holes on top of the bill, at the same time squeezing the little body gently when the air had filled the lungs. Did this 10 times and then laid it down and did the same to duck number...Expand for more
two. Then back to duck number one for ten more times and put it back on the sink. Got the second duck and did the same thing again. When I finished with duck number two I noticed that duck number one gave a little twitch of its head and that was it. Pick the little duck up and really pumped it up and went 20 times this time. The other one began to twitch also so I am getting excited about now and I am just blowing these little duckling in and out, in and out. I laid them both back on the sink when I finished blowing but there still wasn't much movement from them. I looked at my watch and it was time for me to return to work so I took the little ducklings up stairs to our bathroom and placed a few towels in the bath and placed the ducklings in the towels so they could get warmed up or actually to hide them from my son when he came home from school. I'd planned on calling my wife that afternoon and telling her what had happened to the ducklings but got tied up in a meeting. Well, I forgot to call home and upon driving up to our house my wife met me on the porch and said, "What are those ducks doing in the bath tub on my new towels". She said, I took them and put them back in their box where they belong and not on my new towels". I then asked, "Are they alive"? She said, "Of course they are and they have messed all over my new towels". Then I told her to sit down and I told her the story of what had really happened and she was shocked. Come to think of it, so am I when I think about the afternoon I performed CPR on a couple of ducks. By the way CPR does work. .
