Fern's Story

Life My Pets I share quite a few pets with my best friend/landlady and her daughter. We have two cats and two dogs. The cats keep the drama going and generously share their space with us as long as we keep them well-cuddled and fed. My Kids My daughter was my foster child. She is sweet, smart and keeps me on my toes. It's an amazing experience becoming a mother overnight! I don't know how long I'll get to keep her, but every day is well worth it. (More about that later in the story...) My Job I work for the Department of Veterans Affairs. I have always been in favor of peace rather than war, but our veterans did what had to be done and did it for us. So I try to make a little peace for them by helping them with their earned benefits. I always wanted to be a translator when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a off the wall idea. As it turns out, they were right. Instead I just try out a new career every few years. I hope the one I'm in now lasts a LONG time. I spend my 'me' hours with my computer, mostly on google, wikipedia, and an X-Files fan group. I always want to know more about just about anything so one quick search can lead to hours of study - that's what I do for fun. Wierd, huh? The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Phyllis Athey, because she was a wonderful person, my best friend, and the world lost a passionate crusader for women and children when we lost her.. When I watch tv it's X-Files, Bones, anything on the Food Channel, anything on travel, history, archeology. I could never have imagined that my foster daughter, who has now been adopted by kin of her father, would somehow become my 'real' daughter. Without the need of legal approval, but with the generous cooperation of her legal family, she has been a part of my life, and I of hers, for 8 years now. I'm still her mommy and always will be. To this day I remember the moment I became her mommy - it was like God touched both of us and made us one. Wh...Expand for more
o knew that kind of true love could happen between two strangers, a woman and a child? If I won $100 million, I'd give a lot of it to fund research into mental and emotional disorders in children, then spend the rest on a cozy home, a housekeeper and a cook!. My current age is 52. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be so smart and know everything. I was so completely oblivious to the hugeness of life and how much there is to know and understand. I hardly feel like I've even gotten started. I share my home with my best friend, her father and her 9 m granddaughter, which I find to be the best life - a totally unique combination of people, each with their own input and talents - in spite of the occasional grumps, we usually find a way to work things out and get along. No trophies, but I did play the winning serves in a mud volleyball tournament a few years ago. (My serve sounds like a sonic boom and scares people). Great gobs of goo and great fun. And we won! If I got one do-over, I would have gotten more deeply involved in music much earlier in life. If you don't take your talents seriously, you aren't only robbing yourself of the joy of expressing them, but of course, you are depriving others of the chance to enjoy them. I'm trying to make up for lost time with my singing, and I bought a harp (dusty and un-played but loved anyway), and I play in a bell choir. I'd like to form a medieval music group...someday. In 10 years, I hope to be working where I am in the veterans benefits administration. I'm going to get there by moving up the ladder and learning everything I can. My first job was at a car dealership, where I got paid 3.20/hour to type rental leases. What I remember most about it is typing on carbon forms - awful. Hooray for computers! Oh, and how my boss thought I should be deliriously excited about a 5 cent raise (which was only because of minimum wage). Of course gas only cost 23 cents a gallon, but I drove a moped, so, whatEver!
