Floyd's Story
School
Greenacres Jr. High and "Lightning" Lamar Smith! (Never did get to call him that to his face...I often wonder how he is doing these days). Friday, April 13, 1973 - Holiday in Dixie parade in Shreveport - my first parade!! And we won first place!!! I think that was the first time I ever won first place in anything, and probably what locked me in as being a total band geek.
Airline, and the Big Blue Band From Viking Land! Was Mr. Barfield cool, or what?? And Dr. Peterson - kind of a scary guy, but a great band director! I never in my life ever felt more proud than when I was wearing that blue and black West Point uniform. Riley Venable was the coolest of the cool, and inspired me to much craziness in later years. Kelley Venable - how boring would it have been without you there!! Glad we are still in touch. Ed Sayre and Gary Pitchford - my brothers in arms and partners in crime - I miss you guys more than you know. Monday, April 1, 1974 - my first band trip - St. Petersburg, Florida! I've still got the newspaper clipping of us coming down the street in that parade. Monday, April 28, 1975 - band trip number two - Louisville, KY. A bittersweet trip for me...I had a blast, but knew it was my last time to do anything with AHS - the bane of the military family - had to move, and it broke my heart to do so. I've always been a Viking deep down inside, and always will be.
Pontotoc High School. A new town, a new culture, and a new approach. It took a while for me to adjust, but in the end - it became my home. I still wear my class ring from time to time, in fact. PHS Band - we weren't big, but we were pretty good, and dammit, we had fun! Mr Wallace tried to be all big and bad, but we knew he was a teddy bear down inside - and loved him for it. Tupelo Christmas Parades - a whole day off to just hang out at the mall! Trips to Jackson for state contest - new band uniforms - and some great friends. Steve Irby, Pat Daugherty, Bailey Mapp, Trent Long, Mack Huey, Suzy Rish, Jim Rish, and everyone else - I miss you guys, and hope you are doing well. Steve Head - you never knew how much I looked up to you. You were my hero and never knew it, because you were everything I wanted to be. Wish we could have connected better than we did.
The ski party at Trace Lake, a few days before graduation! The campout that night - and my first time to get drunk! Someone should have told me you can't chug vod...Expand for more
ka like you can beer! I learned many lessons that night....
My 1972 Gremlin! God, was that an ugly car, or what?? I still miss it though, and have often wished I had it back. How can we get so emotionally attached to a piece of metal?
I can't believe it's really been 28 years....
College
Band rehearsals!!! Did we ever really do anything besides go to band rehearsal - besides party, that is? Four different colleges - same story - basicly living in that music building. Itawamba was a blast (until the last few months); La. Tech was fun, but I was not really ready for it; loved it at Delta State - probably should have stayed there; UNA has been a mixed blessing. New KKY chapter, BS, grad school, etc...I've accomplished a lot of goals here, and will finish up a few more soon, but it's been a challenge at times. IJC was definately the best of it all....I miss those days and those people more than any.
UPDATE: Well, here I am, back at UNA again!! This time, I'm going to finish that teaching certification, maybe even get a second BS, and then try my hand at teaching high school history. Dusted off the old bass trombone, and am sitting in with the concert band. Have gotten a lot more involved with the band than I originally expected to - seems a few twits causes our Kappa Kappa Psi chapter to get shut down, so now I'm working with some of the guys to actually found a brand new fraternity! Stay on the lookout for Alpha Mu Lambda - coming soon to a school near you!
