John's Story

Life After starting my university degree in Linguistics and French at Western(London,ON), I transferred to Laval University in Québec City in 1988 and completed two degrees: one in French and one in teaching English as a second language. Teaching didn't work out too well at first, but I stayed in Québec and my sister Claire followed me here. We are both still here after almost twenty years. She is married and has two sons and I am not, but am very happy with who I am and who I am with. I am back teaching, to adults now, after working in a souvenir store in old Québec for 12 years. I work mostly with professionals and have been for almost four years. My other sister Susan, who also went to Glebe, has been married for 24 years and lives in Burlington, Ontario with her husband and two daughters( who are 16 and 15). For those of you reading this from Birchmount, my sister Yvonne lives in Scarborough still and works at People's Church. My brother Duane, who didn't attend either of these schools, has been married for 21 years and has a son and two...Expand for more
daughters. I found my birth parents in 1999 and have met a huge extended family. My parents married after I was born and I have a brother and two sisters. I also have tons of second cousins and great-aunts and uncles and grandparents and even a great-grandparent. It has been an amazing journey. I now have relatives across the country, from my grandfather in Vancouver, to my many cousins in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Everett, Massachusetts. Besides all my relatives that I already had in England. Maybe because I have two such interesting families, my passion now is working on family trees. I have undertaken over 125 so far and seem to start a couple of new ones every week. Living in the province of Québec, my speciality is French-canadian families, the records are great thanks to the Catholic church. My great-grandmother was Acadian, so I have found that I am related to many of my friends here, and from the Magdalen Islands. That still amazes me. On my mother's side I am English-Irish, and that is great too! Now I know where my red highlights came from!
