Tom's Story
Life
Hello everyone- its been a long time since 67.... After that I went to UCSB as a chemistry major and wound up with a bachelor's in Geology and Geochemistry. I then went to Baltimore where I earned my Master's and Ph. D. at Johns Hopkins in metamorphic petrology (Geologists always invent fancy terms for what could be expressed in plain English - I study chemical reactions that occur in the deep parts of mountain belts like the base of the Himalayas. mineral - diamond, ruby, emerald, sapphire etc.- with an incredible tale to tell about what it has been through.) I then taught at UCLA for a couple of years in '75 and then moved to the University of Iowa in '78, where I've been a professor ever since. My work has taken me to a lot of interesting places like the Colorado Rockies, Idaho, Northern Maine, northern Canada, the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan (very nice people), east central Brazil (Oro Preto) , Jamaica, Northern Greenland and the Swiss Alps.
