Fran's Story

After graduating in from Santa Rosa High in 74 I went to SRJC, quit after a year and headed off to discover the world. After many miles (and divorce) I finally settled in Illinois, worked as a police dispatcher for quite a few years where I met my current husband Mark, remarried and had 2 daughters. This year we will be celebrating 27 years!! (I didn't know I could do anything for 27 yrs!!) Our oldest, Erin (25 in May) graduated from Taylor University in 07 with a major in Christian Education and now lives and works in Joplin Mo. for a nonprofit organization ..CIY - Christ in Youth. She works with different Church Youth Groups (she has 5 states) checking sites, obtaining permits etc for the groups retreats and mission trips. Her title is site manager and so far really enjoys it. Chrissy (23 in July) is a jr at North Central College(She is planning to take the spring trimester off to travel a bit). She is majoring in Education with an emphasis in Special Ed and a minor in Psychology. Needless to say, we are quite proud of them and quite happy with the choices they have made. As they were growing up we told them to choose a profession that is their passion..... not for the money they could make. Both of them have done just that. (There goes my chance to have them take care of me in my old age!!) Mark is a retired police officer and now works for a friend selling pavement and concrete services. He misses the contact he had for 27 yrs with the public but truly enjoys h...Expand for more
is (new) job. The fact that the pay is better, plus bonuses really has been a plus. As for me, after spending 17 years as a corporate travel agent I decided I needed a change. So I went to work for DuPage Medical Group in the referral department pre-authorizing high tec / nuclear medical tests. It was the perfect place for me to work.... surrounded by medical personnel!! That actually came in handy when I had a stroke at work. After returning whenever I would look a little pale or anything the RN's were all over me. I have also had a couple of heart attacks, quintuple bypass surgery, 2 strokes and most recently 2 back surgeries.) Jan and Feb '08 really sucked....fell and injured my back (resulting in the 2 back surgeries.) I've been off work since 1/1/08 collecting disability. In fact, I have now started to collect Social Security disability, so I won't be re-entering the work force anytime soon. With the job market the way it is, maybe that's not a bad thing. Even with all of that, I am still better off than many people and every day on this side of the grass is a good one!! My inspiration comes from a friend who in 2007 lost his battle with ALS - Lou Gehrig disease. Every time I start to feel down about my physical limitations all I have to do is think of him & I end up counting my blessings. Believe me, It's much better to count my blessings. My years at SRHS were amazing.... amazing teachers, friends and all around experiences...just wish I could remember them all!!
